I'm pleased to share a new publication in the Journal of Applied Gerontology led by Natalie Tham from our @visuAAL_ITN team at the @TCPHI_TCD
https://t.co/98KJFp30hq
The paper investigates why older adults tend to delay accepting camera-based active and assisted living (AAL) technologies, and identifies future self-continuity (the sense of psychological connectedness to one's future self) as a key driver of acceptance. Key findings include:
• Older adults with a more vivid and positive image of their future selves are significantly more likely to accept AAL technologies, as they better recognise the long-term benefits these technologies offer.
• Lower future self-continuity leads to underweighting those long-term benefits, helping explain why older adults so often postpone acceptance.
• The findings point toward developing future interventions to move beyond usability and practical barriers to also support older adults in building a stronger psychological connection with their future selves.
• Acceptance-facilitating interventions should prioritise helping older adults envision their future selves more vividly and positively, rather than focusing on how similar they feel to their future self.
Great work by Natalie and the team, a novel and important contribution to the technology acceptance literature.

Why do people respond differently to digital health self-management tools? Our latest @SEURO2020 publication explores why some adopt these technologies quickly, while others need extra human support or non-technical alternatives.
The study focuses on older adults with multimorbidity using a digital self-management platform over nine months. Through interviews with 42 participants, researchers identified six key themes and four distinct user types.
By understanding these user types, we can better tailor digital self-management tools to meet individual needs, paving the way for more personalised and effective health support.

Nearly a decade ago I first brought together an EU consortium to focus on #multimorbidity#digitalhealth#ageing. In a recent interview with @tcddublin#ResearchMatters I discuss the journey so far working with such incredibly talented people to drive these fields forward.
5 innovations from this work across @ProACT2020@SEURO2020 1) a platform for multimorbidity self management (ProACT) 2) tools to support services to transfer digital health solutions in practice (ProTransfer & ProBCF-C) 3) an AI to assess the impact of a digital health solution on health service performance (patient/ economic outcomes - ProInsight) and 5) a secure knowledge based platform to support the development of advanced data analytics (InterACT) have recently been selected for the EU innovation radar portfolio (high potential innovations from EU research).
