Pycnonemosaurus was first described as a medium-sized abelisaurid, about 6.5 meters long. Most fragmentary fossil taxa tend to get lower size estimates as we learn more about them, but later studies actually revealed Pycnonemosaurus to be much larger than previously thought!
Llukalkan marks the end of my 4 day Abelisaur posting session. Like Viavenator it is from the Bajo de la Caroa formation, and is known from a mostly complete skull of a relatively small Abelisaur. I used this animal’s skull as my primary filler for Viavenator.
Another entry to my Abelisaur collection is Viavenator. Named after Exxonmobil, Viavenator exxoni is a mid-sized Abelisaur from the Bajo de la Carpa Formation. It was found in a Road cut and dates to the Santonian. It would have lived alongside sauropods like Bonitasaura.
Abelisaurus comahuensis is a relatively large Abelisaur from the Anacleto formation. The namesake of the clade, but surprisingly enigmatic. The size of this animal is uncertain due to the lack of postcrania, but I used Grillo et al. 2016’s equation to recover a 7.4 m body length.
