At 22, I pulled into a parking lot 5 miles from my office and cried like a child.

I had an economics degree from a Big Ten school.
I had followed every rule.
I had done everything I was told.

The rules didn't hold up their end of the bargain.

In 2009 I was 12 years old.

My parents divorced.
Both lost their jobs.
Our house was foreclosed on.

I didn't understand it at the time, but I was watching a system fail millions of people — including my family.

That's the day I decided I wanted to be rich.

So I did what everyone told me to do.

Community college → Big Ten economics degree → financial advisor job.

I followed the playbook.

What nobody told me:

The playbook was written for people who are already winning.

Not for us.

I graduated in May 2020.

At the height of COVID.

Never walked across the stage.

My degree arrived in the mail.

That was my reward for years of hard work.

I took a job at a company pushing high-fee annuities on clients who didn't need them.

I didn't believe in the product.
Nobody trusted a 22-year-old kid anyway.

6 months later I was fired for not meeting sales goals.

I pulled into that parking lot and cried.

Not because I lost the job.

Because I had followed the formula and gotten the wrong answer.

So I made a choice.

Unemployment and video games.

Or get to work.

I got to work.

For 8 years I wrote. Researched. Edited.
Stayed up past midnight while my house was silent.
Read the same lines 20 times.

1,000 pages.

An autopsy of the system.

Today I'm 28.

I own a home. Decent savings. Strong retirement.

I'm comfortable.

But I'm not fulfilled.

And that tension — seeming good on paper but not feeling it inside — is the most honest thing I can tell you.

The advice we're given is designed for the system that benefits the people already in power.

Not for us.
