I found this awesome podcast that does a series of 5-min episodes called "tall stories" where they choose a specific site and explain what it says about the city it's located in. Here's an ep about the MTL Olympic stadium #COMS324

I've been thinking about the role sound plays in our built environment, and then I remembered this book! I only read the first chapter but now I'm really inspired to finish it. It maps the "acoustic politics of space", by examining sites like the home and the street #COMS324
#COMS324 reminded me of an activity we did in Intermedia in first year, a kit that prompts you to travel to somewhere you're not familiar with to get to know your built environment more intimately. I'm so interested by the personal relationships we form with our surroundings!
@justincoms324 2/2 whether to save money or maximize spatial efficiency without much priority being placed on appearance. This is what drew me to Montreal rather than somewhere like Vancouver which is decidedly un-messy. #COMS324
@justincoms324 1/2 Kind of like what Jane Jacobs talked about with respect to the character of neighbourhoods. I agree, I think this is something we're losing with modern Western architecture, super homogeneous, flat designs taking the place of character buildings #COMS324
The pandemic-driven invention of "dining bubbles", "bubble yoga" and other attempts to meld public and private space raises some interesting questions about how we judge what is an acceptable obstruction of public space based on who is using it #COMS324
@mcguik Such a good point! The built environment is deeply implicated in social issues as we talked about throughout the course. Things like apartments that sit empty as investments of disused AirBnBs are a standard feature of modern cities, while homelessness is dismissed as inevitable.
@justincoms324 @NatGeo Really good point! This is one area where I think technology could definitely be beneficial! Maybe even if the technology was just something that allowed for better bureaucratic planning this could solve issues like the constant construction too! #coms324
Thinking about how housing in places like Japan is extremely small by Canadian standards, but in many places our large living spaces are seen as excessive. How does our cultural experience of space, as dictated by the built environment around us, affect our beliefs 1/2 #COMS324
The city refuses to provide shelter for people who may have no choice but to sleep outside in the cold, but community action has presented a solution. However, it is not allowed in a built environment with strict hierarchical control over it #coms324
As I mentioned in class, this project makes me think that this could be the start of the "decentralization of power" that Alexander talks about. The issue that arises w/ zoning shows how localized land ownership could help prevent homelessness #coms324

@penelopecoms324 This project looks very promising! I like the idea of making a neighbourhood that is more walkable and self-contained! I do wonder what the implications are in terms of displacement of current residents that often results from these types of urban renewal projects #coms324
@hanhcoms324 This is such an interesting example of how our world forces us into a state where there's less distinction between our homes/personal lives and work/participation in the economy. On the other hand, this could be a good idea for design in terms of cutting down on commutes!
@mcguik@LaraK_coms324 Such a good point! The pandemic is pointing out so many of the existing weak points in infrastructure that need to be addressed! Even within cities, access to affordable housing is one problem that the pandemic has exacerbated as well #coms324
#COMS324 our discussion about how the natural landscape is manipulated by humans made me think of the Stockholm metro--architects chose to leave the rock exposed as part of the design. Very futuristic to integrate nature into our built environment, rather than dominate&destroy it
Vancouver airport has been named the best in North America for 10 consecutive years for its beautiful design that incorporates the elements of natural beauty BC is known for, and its rich Indigenous history. It makes me extra happy to be home every time I pass through! #coms324
