This morning, we were very proud to welcome the Rt. Hon. @wesstreeting MP back to the University of East London for a major announcement on the future of the NHS. Joined by other ministers from the @DHSCgovuk, including @zubirahmed and @karinsmyth, as well as key stakeholders from across the @NHSuk and local government, the Health Secretary delivered an important announcement on the future of our health service.
It was a privilege to see our University once again providing the backdrop for such a significant national moment, and we were particularly proud of our healthcare students who were able to attend the event and ask questions during the session. Mr. Streeting last joined us in October to officially open our Neighbourhood Health Hub, a pioneering model providing accessible, preventative care for local communities, bringing healthcare closer to home through innovation and collaboration.
At UEL, we are proud to host and contribute to this vital national renewal, working in partnership with the NHS to help drive real-world improvements in health and care.

Today, we marked an important milestone at the University of East London with the groundbreaking of our new academic building at the Stratford Health Campus.
The start of construction shows our commitment to equity, sustainability, and social impact, creating a space where education, research and community health come together.
It will support our Practice Makes Professional Curriculum and provide open, collaborative spaces, dedicated teaching rooms, and a cutting-edge lecture hall designed with exceptional flexibility to accommodate a wide range of uses for students and staff alike, including the use of virtual reality, augmented reality and simulation spaces with avatar tables.
Building on partnerships with the @NHSuk and our work across the London Borough of Newham, the new facility will offer cutting-edge learning environments to train the next generation of healthcare professionals.
More than a building, this is about expanding opportunity, supporting our communities, and helping deliver a fairer, healthier future.

If the University of East London disappeared tomorrow:
▪️ 13,275 UK jobs would vanish
▪️ Nearly 3,000 jobs in Newham would be lost
▪️ £1.17bn would be removed from the UK economy
Universities aren’t just places of learning. They’re economic anchors for communities.

Happy Mothering Sunday 🌺 to all our mums, to all those who have lost their lovely mums & to all those who mother us whatever their shape or form. Mum, you made me who I am today. Thank you 🙏
We’re proud to celebrate @varvas_v, UEL’s Vice-President (Engagement) and Chief Marketing Officer, who has been shortlisted for Inspirational Role Model of the Year at the @RainbowHonours.
The Rainbow Honours recognise individuals who are championing inclusion and advancing equality for the LGBTQIA+ community.
A fantastic recognition of her work championing inclusion and supporting the LGBTQIA+ community at the University of East London.
Congratulations Vanessa!

Across the UK, women are more likely to be misdiagnosed, wait longer for treatment and have their pain dismissed. Although women live longer than men, they spend more years in ill health. In fact, the UK has the largest gender health gap in the G20.
UEL Vice-Chancellor & President @ProfBroderick argues that improving women's health must sit at the centre of @NHSuk reform - not at the margins.
Great to see this pushback on the “degree factory” narrative from @UEL_News VC @ProfBroderick
Modern universities deliver skills, opportunity and economic growth in every part of the country – a role that deserves greater recognition in policy debates.

Universities are more than degree factories.
In a new piece for iNews @theipaper, UEL Vice-Chancellor & President @ProfBroderick challenges the narrow way universities are often judged.
At the University of East London, our impact goes far beyond degrees.
We employ thousands, with hundreds more local business roles sustained by our activity. Remove it and more than 3,000 jobs would disappear from the London Borough of Newham – more than the workforces of London City Airport and @WestHam combined.
From training the workforce that powers our @NHSuk, schools and businesses to supporting local enterprises, universities are woven into the everyday life of our communities.
Universities are employers, partners and engines of opportunity for the communities they serve.

Last night, Docklands was transformed into a landscape of light and motion. 🎇✨
#UELAfterDark was a powerful reminder of what happens when our community unites to push creative boundaries. From high-wire feats to fire-lit performances, our campus became a living gallery for east London.
We don’t just observe the world changing, we are the ones driving that momentum forward.
A huge thank you to everyone who joined us and to the incredible teams who brought this wonderful evening to life! 🙌

After Dark may be over, but it was a core memory for some of our students. 🔮
“The entire university campus was illuminated for the After Dark event — it honestly felt like the dragon had come to life and was soaring above us. I’m already counting down to next year’s celebration!” - Veer Rathod, Computer Science student.

Excellence in Nursing & Healthcare: UEL Shortlisted for 6 Student Nursing Times Awards! 🏆
We are incredibly proud to announce that the University of East London has been shortlisted for six categories for the 2026 Student Nursing Times Awards. @NursingTimes
AND the last + most crazy part of the @UEL_News delegation last week was this “innovation evening” hosted by @vishalgondal bhai & @mumbai_tech_. Totally rocking.
Neuroscience and Space and Design in Physical AI and Infra History across both countries … and what not! Thank you, to all the TEAM members who showed up in best spirits, to Vishal who moderated to perfection, and to Lady Saadiya Ahmad, Rob Waterson, who took every single question on front foot, made copious notes, and as I can see from the days that have followed, are already figuring common synergies across a host of stuff.
We @ Leverage did some 5-6 high impact things together with UEL in possibly <100 hrs, and boy oh boy, I’ve taken away much more than I’d thought.
The common thread, also, has been its Vice Chancellor @ProfBroderick’s leadership, which shines through even when she isn’t in the room .. and that’s definitely something I’ll personally aspire to get to in my own leadership journey everything next ;)
More to come soon.
Nearly 2 million children in the UK experience early language delays - and new research is asking whether everyday noise in nurseries could be part of the problem. 👶
Led by Dr. Gemma Goldenberg (@GemmaGoldenberg) at the University of East London’s Institute for the Study of Early Years and supported by the Nuffield Foundation, the study explores how background noise affects babies’ communication and whether simple changes could help give children a better start.
