Pope Leo XIV on war in Iran:
"I think this has already been made very clear: the notion of a just war no longer applies. The problem is that just war theory developed in centuries when no one could have imagined the weapons we have today or humanity's capacity for destruction."
Dodger fans went to Mets en masse whereas many Giant fans probably switched to the Yankees over time due to convenience of stadium to Bronx/Westchester.
The Giants were the team of the Manhattan Irish (and some others - Henry Roth writes about them) who dissipated more as a group than some Dodger bases. Up until recently Piper’s Kilt in Inwood was covered in Giants memorabilia.
@senderowiczj it's not like upper manhattan is exactly the sticks, that's why it's so weird! i hear more about the baltimore colts than the new york giants
The novelization (which became a source for stuff like Palpatine’s name) makes the Emperor sound like an out-of-touch bureaucrat. Again, this was an interesting setup that they abandoned coterminous with making Luke/Vader Oedipal dynamic explicit rather than implicit.
This worked in Star Wars. You got a sense that the world was evil but normie evil, and Vader didn't fit in. He didn't wear a uniform! He boarded ships and piloted a fighter! He was an evil relic. As Tarkin put it "The Jedi are extinct. Their fire has gone out of the Universe."
The later movies undid all of this. They made the Emperor a force-wielding wizard. The Emperor should have been like Tarkin.
@code_mom_@crosstown_line The compactness of the store and complete lack of a parking lot to traverse in/out makes a difference. A lot of the people in that discourse are assuming any grocery trip is an hour commitment rather than a very quick stop.
Even getting a FreshDirect delivery to your door around here is much different than driving to an exurban grocery store because one truck trip is supporting dozens of homes.
A lot of the entire argument is trying to buttress the idea that exurban American life is better, even normative, particularly for families. In so doing, it tries to graft the realities of that lifestyle onto urban patterns which are quite different.
@crosstown_line These people really overestimate how long you spend in a grocery store here.
I use the Fairway phone checkout app to shop right into reusable bag and rarely spend more than 10 minutes in there.
28,000 riders take the M34 bus every day. It moves as slow as 3 mph (slower than walking speed).
This plan to create a dedicated busway along 34th St. St. will improve bus speeds by up to 60%, speed pedestrian crossings, and make the street safer for everyone.
The dedicated busway on 14th St has been a big success and it will be on 34th as well. Big win.
