I captured this lovely view last night in Cygnus of the remains of a massive star that exploded (as a supernova) several 1000 years ago. The full span of the remnant covers an area of sky 6 times larger than that covered by the full Moon. #easternveilnebula#supernova#stardust
I glimpsed the slenderest sliver of the lit Moon last night…the subtle reveal of our cosmic companion is always wondrous. (Photobombed by foreground tree at the lower part 😊) #crescent#moon#WondersOfTheMoon
I went fishing last night…in the cosmos…and hooked this fish head 😊 Glowing gases and dust clouds in this nebula look like the head of a fish! The Fishhead nebula is a star-making factory about 6,000 light years away in Cassiopeia #nebula#starbirth#OurCosmos
I caught an owl last night! We’re seeing the dying phases of a Sun-like star. Hot gases have been shed as the star runs out of nuclear fuel. The Owl nebula spans about 2,000 times the Earth to Neptute distance. The lovely green hues are due to glowing oxygen gas. #planetarynebula
Had a great time yesterday talking astrophysics with the brilliant Yr 11 students at Canary Wharf College (Crossharbour); fantastic enthusiasm from budding scientists! Happy British Science Week! #BritishScienceWeek#astronomy@ScienceWeekUK
Peering almost 25 million light-years deep, I snapped the stunning Pinwheel Galaxy (M101) last night…nearly twice the span of our Milky Way Galaxy, it packs atleast 1 trillion stars. Looking down from afar, our Galaxy would look something like this spiral pattern #galaxy#m101
Just attend the awesome UCL 200 illuminated light show to mark the bicentennial year of @ucl … so honoured and chuffed that among all the amazing UCL highlights an image of me was projected onto the esteemed buildings! #UCL200#universitycollegelondon
Very deeply honoured to have received the Royal Astronomical Society’s Lifetime Achievement Award 2026: https://t.co/A9E2rzxRxC #RoyalAstronomicalSociety
Snapped this lovely flower in space! It’s the Rosette Nebula in the constellation on Monoceros. The nebula spans 100 light years across. The cluster of stars in the centre were born in the nebula and are clearing a hole in the Rosette #nebula#Rosette#wondersofthenightsky
Captured this lovely view of the Orion Nebula, a star-making factory that’s almost 90 million times further from us than the Sun, in the constellation of Orion, The Hunter. (With the bonus appearance of a meteor streak!) #orion#starformation#stars#OurCosmos#meteor
