Populist nationalists are attacking international organizations, but Kellogg faculty fellow Richard Clark (@ProfRickyClark) says they aren’t going down without a fight.
In their new book "Global Governance Under Fire" (@PrincetonUPress), Clark and Allison Carnegie (@AllieCarnegie) reveal how institutions like the EU and NATO are "persisting and adapting" to survive the populist wave.
Through strategies like "freezing out" hostile actors, these organizations are fortifying themselves – though often at the cost of being less democratic.

Populists aren’t just weakening global institutions; they’re reshaping them.
In @goodauth with @AllieCarnegie, we show how IOs respond by appeasing populists and their constituents as well as sidelining them. Both help institutions survive, but at a cost. https://t.co/pEA9wAyb4W

No administration of my lifetime has been more antagonistic toward the private sector, free markets, and free trade. All the warnings of socialists and Democratic overreaches and government intrusion — it's all worse in reality right now than ever before. Just remarkable.
Join us for the Political Economy of International Organization Conference (@The_PEIO) at the University of Texas at Austin, January 7-9, 2027. Submission is now open at https://t.co/mYLc0YKfI8. Thanks Terry Chapman, Dan Nielson, @goodhouses, @NateMJensen for hosting!
