THE CRUX:
Discernment is FIRST by a test of SPIRITS, not by an observation of WORKS. Therefore, irrespective of the public actions of a person, if the person is sponsored by a demon spirit, he is not of God.
The Babalawo was not of God. Period. Lying-wonders and public acts of generosity notwithstanding. Think of it: if deception does not LOOK as close to the original as possible, no one will be deceived by it. This is why discerning of SPIRITS is critical.

PERSONALLY
I walked into a cousin's house in 1999, and I saw him on the TV. I knew nothing about him at the time, but I knew (discerned) the spirit behind him was not of God. That was my introduction to him – by the discerning of spirits. Simple.

So, yes, the real problem is that discernment has plummeted in the church on the continent.
We are high on suspicion and analysis and biases, but almost flat on discernment.
This is the problem.
