OW Seniors graduate today! Shout out to my Spanish 4 and my Spanish 5/AP Seal of Biliteracy winners and my Spanish 5 class for being awarded 2nd place for their script writing in their short film “Donde los gritos mueren” at the Univ. of Central MO Modern Language Film Festival!
Tonight was our successful yearly Exhibition Night at OW with Spanish students in levels 1 and 4 sharing with their friends and families their family and friendship unit projects speaking in Spanish. We have a wonderful community that supports Spanish learning!
Excited that Aaron Shannon, OW grad 2022, visited to share his experience living in Argentina with my Spanish 4 class; we even drank mate! His Seal of Biliteracy award allowed him to share the importance of knowing another language for career success! @OlatheWl@OlatheWestOwls
Excited that Mr Falcon, our school safety specialist, visited my Spanish 1 classes yesterday and today to talk about the benefits of drinking mate, South America’s green tea. Now students know what he’s drinking when we see him in the hallways with his mate gourd!🧉
Grateful for local community connections to Mexico for sharing traditional Mexican holiday customs, actively interacting with students, and gifting our Spanish 4-5/AP classes with traditional Mexican candies today! @OlatheWestOwls @OlatheWl
MRI scans revealed that bilingual participants had more connectivity between brain regions than monolingual participants, and this connectivity was stronger in those who learned their second languages at a younger age. https://t.co/zhBD0yzxcy

Spanish 4-5/AP Ss examined how art reflects community traditions by participating in a Día de los Muertos workshop at the Nelson Atkins Museum. Students designed and painted tapetes, an artwork to honor their deceased loved ones, and wrote about its meaning.
Spanish 5 class read short stories from Carmen Lomas Garza about Hispanic family traditions. One was about a family making tamales together. Tonight some students celebrated building a comunidad de familia as a class by eating together at Bonito Michoacán. @OlatheWl
Over 45% of my Spanish 1 students brought authentic Hispanic food to celebrate cinco de mayo! They used Spanish to name the food, describe it, and state whether they wanted to try the dishes or not. #tamales#arrozconleche#pandulce#horchata @OlatheWestOwls
