In 1953, Black residents of Baton Rouge were in the middle of a historic bus boycott. Black riders made up 80% of the city's bus passengers but were not allowed to sit. For eight days, they refused to ride. The Baton Rouge City Council was forced to the table. It was one of the first organized challenges to segregation in the South, and two years later, Montgomery followed their lead.
#OTD Jun 22, 1908: A white mob lynched 9 Black men in Sabine County, TX, within a 24-hour period. The reign of racial terror began when a white farmer was shot to death in his home by an unknown assailant on the evening of June 21st.
