Pokédex #088 — Grimer
Type: Poison
Special Ability: Turning trash into treasure.
Habitat: Waste Management, Recycling & Environmental Services
🔬 FIELD RESEARCH
GFL is one of the largest waste management companies in North America, providing garbage collection, recycling, landfill operations, and other environmental services across the United States and Canada. Not exactly the most exciting business on the surface.
But people produce garbage every day, regardless of what the economy is doing. Somebody has to collect it. And once you've established the routes, infrastructure, and customer relationships, it's not particularly easy for someone else to come in and compete.
⚡ EVOLUTION POTENTIAL
I'm bullish on waste management as a long-term business. It's not dependent on the next technological breakthrough or whatever sector Wall Street is chasing this month.
GFL has been expanding through acquisitions, most recently closing its purchase of SECURE Waste Infrastructure in September. That deal expands its footprint in Western Canada and adds a significant network of waste processing, recovery, and disposal facilities.
The underlying numbers have been pretty solid too.
Q2 2026:
Revenue: +16.3%
Adjusted EBITDA: +14.8%
Organic Revenue Growth: +6.4%
Adjusted Free Cash Flow: $236.7M, up from $137.1M.
And GFL raised its full-year guidance.
The SECURE acquisition should provide another opportunity to grow earnings and cash flow as the businesses are integrated.
But there's another reason I've been watching this one.
🐳 UNUSUAL ACTIVITY DETECTED
The options chain has been unusually active, and there's a potential takeover in the background.
More than 12,800 December $45 calls traded, over 45x the prior open interest at that strike. And the activity has continued.
Bloomberg recently reported two competing private-equity groups pursuing GFL.
GROUP 1:
$BX Blackstone
$KKR KKR
Energy Capital Partners
GROUP 2:
$BAM Brookfield Asset Management
IFM Investors
GFL has already acknowledged receiving preliminary expressions of interest and formed a special committee to evaluate potential discussions.
There's been speculation around a $50/share deal, although no definitive transaction price has been announced.
Two competing PE groups, a potential take-private, and heavy call activity.
📓 PROFESSOR OAK'S NOTES
Everyone wants to find the next explosive growth stock.
Meanwhile, companies like $WM and $RSG have spent decades building valuable businesses by collecting garbage. I think GFL has an interesting opportunity to follow a similar path. The recent SECURE acquisition adds scale, and the underlying business continues to grow.
There's certainly risk here. GFL carries meaningful debt, acquisitions take time to integrate, and there's no guarantee a buyout gets done. And with all the takeover speculation, some of that potential upside may already be reflected in the share price.
But I like the business even without a deal.
The PE interest and options activity just make the situation more interesting.
Grimer might not look like much today, but there's always the potential to evolve into Muk.
