The George H.W. Bush carrier strike group arrived in U.S. 5th Fleet last week, becoming the third U.S. aircraft carrier operating in the Middle East. According to CENTCOM, this is the first time since the 2003 Iraq War that the U.S. has triple-carrier coverage in the region. Outside the Gulf of Oman in the Arabian Sea, the Abraham Lincoln CSG and Tripoli ARG are supporting blockade measures. The Gerald R. Ford CSG remains on station in the Red Sea.

Four of America’s 11 carriers are currently in maintenance or have an availability scheduled this year. Three are deployed in the Middle East, one is forward-stationed in the Indo-Pacific, two are training, and one is at homeport.

Why is the USS George H W Bush sailing around Africa and not through the Suez Canal and the Bab el-Mandeb.

Well, there are several possibilities.

1️⃣The US ships are avoiding the Bab el-Mandeb and the Houthis.

This is the one being echoed by many, but it is the least likely. US Navy ships routinely sailed past the Houthis since they started their latest round of attacks in late 2023.

The Houthi were fairly inefficient in attacking merchant ships, and only sank 4 ships, of which 3 were only sunk because the crews had abandoned ship.

2️⃣They are trying to avoid the Suez Canal.

This is more likely as the carrier is completely exposed. It cannot fly its aircraft, its defenses are limited due to the geography of the canal and ships exact position is known in real time.

3️⃣ Finally, the Cape of Good Hope routing allows for training and flight operations all through the voyage and it avoids chokepoints.
