@determu Is "music time" a communal activity? Do people gather around after dinner to sing? Does one person noodle on an instrument by themselves while others go about their reading/sewing? Are people all playing together as a form of recreation/bonding/ritual?
@determu Since Leshy's are made of wood, my first thought was semantron (which actually is used in Eastern Orthodox monasteries). https://t.co/unUGsIKUJG
HOWEVER - it really depends on the social/community structure of the hermitage.
@cosine_distance I seriously dislike Apple's ecosystem, but as a professor/musician, the iPad has been a game-changer. I have stopped bringing my laptop to campus and only travel with it on week+ long trips.
I even screencast my iPad while teaching instead of using whiteboard for music theory.
@MeeruNilaya Since you and I both went to college in the post-9/11 Bush Era USA, I'm damn curious which college professor thought Orientalism was no longer a thing.
Imagine taking a few Bible verses on human sexuality and demanding they be legislated over our entire country, yet reducing the +3,000 Bible verses calling for a generous use of wealth that prioritizes the poor, the vulnerable, and the refugee to a private, personal choice.
Me: ::climbs to top of highest holy peak in all the land to find the sage hermit meditating there::
Sage: Why have you come?
Me: I seek the most secret secret there is in life
Sage: A worthy quest. Then ask, my child
Me: How do you keep socks on a baby
@nickzanca As a music professor who listens to music all the time and almost definitely can process/analyze it faster than the average person...
...there is no way in hell I could do even half that number.
I know “discipline” is still a dirty word to so many people who misread Foucault, but even Foucault recognized that self-discipline is the only means we have to intellectual freedom, and that it must be taught. Immensely depressing to see professors disavow that work.
@DrMaDMo It's so damaging to the intellectual growth of scholars too. Students learn to fake confidence and insight to get stuff through before they actually know themselves whether they should be confident in their arguments or if those arguments are insightful
@katherineschof8 You have divine timing! I'm giving a guest performance/talk tomorrow about the blurriness of the communities/theologies represented by "bhakti"/"sufi"/"yogi", with a focus on Kabir/Nath vernacular poetry. This is a perfect visual companion!
To the people celebrating the mass murder of Israeli civilians, you have lost your humanity. To the people enthusiastically calling for Israel to decimate Gaza, densely populated with 2 million Palestinian civilians, you have lost your humanity. Israelis and Palestinians are real people, just like you and me.
@yakabikaj @AsadFromNYC Bhabha actually gets partial credit for helping me come out of that phase. Midway through grad school, I heard him speak at my uni and thought "either I'm completely stupid or that was just pointless empty academic wankery." I assumed the former for a while before realizing...
My actual professor of critical race theory in law school said “John Brown was white, what do you have to be ashamed of personally unless you identify more with the enslavers than with John Brown?”
