Building and strengthening the progressive grassroots across MA have a scorecard:

"If its proponents’ objectives include empowering marginalized voices and minor parties, then increasing the costs while reducing the time to organize and campaign seems particularly unwise."

"....Look at what the top-two system has produced in California and Washington: vote-splitting lockouts, perverse incentives to game the primary, and pressure on candidates without big money to drop out."

The nine questions on our ballot in Massachusetts could dramatically change our Commonwealth. Here's where I stand on each of them.

MA will be on such a list in the future if Question 4 passes. Vote YES on 4.

.@ProgressiveMass recently celebrated the 15th anniversary of its founding conference, and I was so happy that we were able to get Harmony Wu to write this retrospective.

The @BayStateBanner, Boston's Black newspaper of record, just endorsed NO on Question 3.

They see through the false promises of this dangerous ballot question and know it would do NOTHING to make our government more representative of the people.

Vote No On 3!!

"In many ways, the proposal in Question 3 is a misleading solution that has gone searching for pretexts that voters might find compelling."

Question 3 is a power grab, plain and simple. It is a billionaire, private equity-backed scheme to rig our elections, to tilt the playing field, and make it harder for working-class people to run for office and to win.

And I want to be clear about who stands to lose if this harmful ballot measure is passed next month.

It is the single mom working two jobs who wants to fight for affordable housing in the State House.

It is the union organizer who has spent a lifetime fighting for workers' rights and wants to bring that fight to Congress.

It is the community advocate who knows what it means when your neighborhood is overlooked, your school is underfunded, your family is struggling to make ends meet, and wants to do something about it.

It's the first-time candidate who doesn't have a rolodex of wealthy donors or millions of dollars to spend on television ads.

Question 3 would stack the deck against those people and hand even more power to those who already have too much of it.

If we're serious about reforming elections, we should pass Ranked Choice Voting. We should lower the voting age. And we should vote YES on Question 4 to make Election Day voter registration a reality in Massachusetts.

But Question 3 ain't it.

Massachusetts must Vote NO on Question 3 to stop billionaires from buying our elections and keep power in the hands of the people.

Why are private equity execs flocking to Question 3?

It's because they think it's a good for their bank accounts and a way to crush nascent working-class populism. I unpack it in the piece here.

To understand the impact of a top-two primary, we turned to friends in California who have seen how it played out.

Here's long-time climate activist RL Miller, who explains how it's been a way for Big Business to buy legislative seats and crush progressives.

MA, vote NO on 3.

[Jonathan 'Boo and Vote' Cohn @JonathanCohn]

This remains one of the best pieces I've read about CA's jungle primary system and how it's mission from day one was to increase the number of corporate Dems in the Legislature (not anything about "democracy") -- and how it has succeded in that goal.

"We are living in a world of hoarding. It is these hoarders who want us to starve the government, and then blame the government when it no longer functions optimally, hoping the blame fosters destruction. Question 5 is in the same vein."

Early voting starts today in Massachusetts! There are 9 ballot questions and private equity is spending billions to undermine our democracy! @ProgressiveMass has a great voter guide with useful background on each question if you prefer a deeper dive! https://t.co/dZs47QGEbQ

"Fewer people making an ever-larger number of decisions is bad for democracy, and it’s also one of the biggest causes of inertia. Even if you assume the best of intentions of all, centralization slows things down. "

"There is no question our elections are in need of reform and the stated goals of Q3 are laudable. However, there is limited evidence that top two-primaries will achieve these goals and a risk they will cause new problems and exacerbate existing ones."
