Adam Smith may have done more to derail economics than to save it.

According to Murray Rothbard, the late Catholic scholastics and the Austrian School were already developing subjective value theory centuries before Smith. The Spanish scholastics, the School of Salamanca, and later French and Italian Catholic thinkers emphasized utility, market pricing, and individual choice long before the British classical economists.

Rothbard argued that Smith and Ricardo reintroduced the labor theory of value under Protestant-Calvinist influence, turning economics away from subjective value and toward “objective” labor-cost theories that later paved the way for Marxism.

Ironically, the real understanding of free exchange and market society emerged not in Protestant England, but in the Catholic Italian city-states of the 14th century.

Even Rothbard, a lifelong atheist, later admitted that Catholic natural law, scholasticism, and decentralized medieval institutions were foundational to liberty and free markets in the West.
