Canadians deserve truth and transparency, not accusations, when they ask questions about the Kamloops Indian Residential School claims about missing children.

Yesterday, federal authorities found that the department overseen by Crown-Indigenous Relations Minister Rebecca Alty breached an Act of Parliament by unlawfully concealing records related to the purported graves of 215 children.

The department has been ordered to begin releasing the requested files within 36 days. “The department must respond to the request without further delay,” wrote Information Commissioner Caroline Maynard. To date, the department has attempted to block disclosure by classifying all records as “confidential information.”
