Former NHS surgeon jailed for £466,000 insurance fraud after self-amputations
A former NHS vascular surgeon has been sentenced to 32 months in prison for a shocking insurance fraud scheme involving the deliberate amputation of his own legs.
Neil Hopper, 49, from Cornwall in England, UK froze his legs with dry ice in 2019, causing surgical removal, and falsely claimed the amputations were due to sepsis.
He received £466,653.81 in payouts from insurers Aviva and Old Mutual Health, which he spent on luxury items including a £22,000 campervan, a £15,000 hot tub, and home renovations.
Hopper, who performed hundreds of amputations during his career, admitted that his actions were motivated by both greed and a long-standing sexual interest in amputation.
In addition to two counts of fraud by false representation, he pleaded guilty to three charges of possessing extreme pornographic material connected to the “Eunuch Maker” website.
He was handed a 10-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order alongside his prison sentence.
Judge James Adkin described the case as “exceptionally high” in harm, noting Hopper misled medical professionals by claiming his injuries were illness-related.
Despite returning to work at Royal Cornwall Hospital on prosthetic legs and even winning the 2020 “Against All Odds” Amplifon Award, Hopper has been suspended from the medical register since December 2023.
The Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust confirmed the offences were unrelated to his professional conduct, and no patients were at risk.
