⚡️ Global data center power demand is projected to rise 165% by 2030, reaching about 92GW by 2027 with strong growth through 2028.

US spending on new data center construction has tripled in 3 years, while third-party facilities remain near record occupancy.

This combination signals supply chasing demand rather than the other way around.

The driver is compute, as training clusters string together hundreds of thousands of GPUs with high-speed networking, and they run continuously for long jobs.

Inference then multiplies that footprint, since once a model is launched every additional user request is extra compute that needs power, cooling, and capacity.

Power intensity is rising at the rack level, since AI racks draw far more than general purpose racks and that gap keeps widening each new hardware cycle.

Higher rack power forces denser power distribution, more aggressive cooling, and stricter layout rules to keep airflow and liquid loops stable.

Networking pushes power too. To handle AI workloads, thousands of GPUs need to pass data back and forth extremely quickly.

Standard 100Gbps links that were common a few years ago are not enough anymore, so the industry is shifting to 400G and even 800Gbps optical transceivers and switches.

These higher speeds require more advanced hardware, like fiber-optic modules, switches, and retimers, which consume additional electrical power. Multiply that by tens of thousands of ports in a large AI cluster, and the networking power demand becomes a noticeable part of the total data center energy budget.

Facilities shift from typical medium-voltage feeds to heavier high-voltage interconnects, because multi-campus regions can require many TWh of annual energy.

Lead times for transformers and substations become a real planning constraint, so power procurement starts as early as site selection.

Capital expenditure patterns reflect this ramp, with hyperscalers stepping up multi-year programs to add land, shells, and the electrical and mechanical plant that make those shells usable.

Server purchases and network gear then layer on top, which is why construction metrics can climb even before the big training pods are delivered.

Occupancy staying high despite new builds tells the same story, because tenants pre-lease and pin capacity to roadmaps for model training and serving.

This behavior locks in power and space years ahead, reducing slack in the system.

The base forecast calls for data center demand to grow about 50% to 92GW by 2027, implying around 17% compound annual growth from 2025 to 2028.
