1999 Murdered Prince: Prince Charles Patrick Happy Kijanangoma

In 1999, Tooro Kingdom witnessed a royal bloodbath that shook Uganda. Prime Minister John Sanyu Katuramu orchestrated the brutal assassination of Prince Charles Happy Kijanangoma. This was a classic power struggle over royal wealth, and it ended in a hail of bullets at a Fort Portal bar.

At the time, King Oyo was just a boy. Katuramu ruled as regent and wielded massive financial power. Prince Kijanangoma became his fiercest critic, accusing the Prime Minister of looting the kingdom. The Prince filed a legal caveat to block Katuramu and Queen Mother Best Kemigisa from controlling royal assets.

To protect his empire, Katuramu hired a hit squad. On March 25, 1999, assassins gunned down Kijanangoma. The plot quickly unraveled when prosecutors proved Katuramu used his own radio station's vehicle for the getaway and paid the killers in cash. Katuramu was convicted and sentenced to death.

Thanks to a 2009 Supreme Court ruling that commuted long-standing death sentences, Katuramu escaped the gallows. He eventually reconciled with the Kijanangoma family and walked out of Luzira Prison a free man in 2021.

Fast forward to September 2026, and Tooro is once again engulfed in a vicious royal crisis. Following the tragic death of 34-year-old King Oyo on August 27, the kingdom is completely torn apart over who takes the throne.

History is repeating itself with the very same players. Queen Mother Kemigisa insists King Oyo left a will naming a secret biological son as the rightful heir. However, the Babiito clan elders completely bypassed her. In a stunning twist, they elected a news anchor to the throne: Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma.

The Kijanangoma lineage has returned to the center of power. Right now, Queen Mother Kemigisa alleges her family is under military house arrest at the palace. She is openly rejecting the clan's king-elect just days before King Oyo's burial. A quarter of a century after a tragic assassination, the battle for the soul of Tooro Kingdom rages on.

Who is the person of Omusuuga? According to a friend within the Royal circles, Prince Charles Kamurasi is not just a Mubiito. He is also, not just a brother to the fallen King’s Late Father, King George David Kaboyo. No.

He is married to Mrs Betty Kamurasi, King-mother Best Kemigisha’s sister, with whom they have three Handsome Princes. If indeed King Oyo left no Crown Prince, and the Royal family chooses to look through the same linage, the search, I’m told, might not stretch beyond Omusuuga family.
