The turnout is the real story here..🇨🇦
Across these three by-elections, there were about 245,748 registered electors and only 105,254 valid votes cast.
That’s roughly 42.8% turnout.
Meaning about 57% of registered voters did not vote.
North Vancouver….Capilano: 45.6% turnout
Beaches…East York: 40.4%
Chicoutimi…Le Fjord: 42.2%
The Liberals won all three…decisively among the people who showed up.
But this is the important distinction:
Winning an election is not the same thing as demonstrating that a majority of the electorate enthusiastically endorsed you.
In North Vancouver, for example, the Liberal candidate won nearly 59% of votes cast ..but those 23,805 votes equal only about 27% of registered electors.
Beaches–East York: Liberal votes were about 22.5% of registered electors.
Chicoutimi–Le Fjord: about 21.7%.
So yes, these are legitimate Liberal victories.
But anyone presenting three low-turnout by-election wins as proof that “Canada is united behind the government” is stretching the data far beyond what it actually says.
The Liberals won the voters who turned up.
Most registered voters didn’t turn up at all.
That’s a very different headline.
