The traits you described…. All these mentality .. aren’t exclusive to rural life. They are also visible in cities, corporations, politics, gated societies, and among highly educated people too….

That’s why I struggle with the term every time anyone use it for any wrong. It ties a negative mindset to a place and a people. As someone who comes from a village , the word means roots, community, hard work, and resilience to me not social backwardness…..

If the issue is casteism, call it casteism. If it’s selfishness, call it selfishness. If it’s feudal thinking, call it feudal thinking. Those words describe the problem more accurately than dehati….

Dehatism is a mental state & subconscious philosophy of life ingrained into people.
It has many connotations like jugaad mindset, chalta hai attitude, thuggery & connivance, feudal “jiski laathi uski bhains” attitude; etc.

In this context, it is selfish behaviour in public spaces with no regard for others. They think about their own comfort or comfort of only their community (family, caste, group) in public. This is the reason despite being 1.45 billion living closely we know so little about other communities & their practices. We do not care.

Most of the issues evolved from the dehat (rural way of life in India here) but never went away. For eg- female foeticide happened in cities but roots of this problem were in dehat, continued for centuries. Same with communalism, casteism, dowry demands & crimes.

To celebrate all this and thinking “mah lyf mah rulz” is dehatism.

There is a good argument to be made that China has *more and better* democracy today (government working towards what majority of population wants),

than US and India.

Democracy is not just about the ability to vote or dissent, there is more to it than that.

And everyone in the world (any country regardless of it's government style) wants food, shelter, clothing, safety, healthcare. China does it way better than the world's biggest democracy and world's richest democracy.
