Fiber is not essential. That is not my opinion it is what the research actually shows.

Essential nutrients have a deficiency disease. There is no fiber deficiency disease. That alone should make you question everything you have been told.

The idea that you need dietary fiber to maintain a healthy gut microbiome is one of the most repeated claims in nutrition, and it does not hold up to scrutiny.

A randomised controlled trial published in Cell found that some people had a measurably pro-inflammatory response to dietary fiber.

Not neutral.
Not mixed.
More inflammation.

And a 2025 study found that a plant-based diet high in fiber and carbohydrates actually decreased microbiome diversity in participants. The intervention designed to help the gut made it less diverse.

More diversity is also not automatically better. That assumption has never been properly tested. We just repeat it.

And then a four-year carnivore diet case study found that complete fiber elimination produced no meaningful loss of microbiome diversity compared to omnivores. The gut adapted. It found other substrates. It did not collapse.
