On 29th May 2026, Sri Sanjay Kumar, Secretary, Department of School Education & Literacy (DoSEL), Ministry of Education, inaugurated National Award Ceremony for School Challenge–TOFEI 2025 and launched the Nasha Mukt Vidyalaya Action Plan and Portal, reaffirming commitment of the Government towards creating tobacco-free and drug-free educational institutions. In his keynote address, he emphasised the need for sustained awareness, institutional responsibility and collective action to safeguard students from tobacco and substance abuse, while fostering healthier and safer learning environments across the country.

The Three-Year Nasha Mukt Vidyalaya Action Plan (2026–2029), focuses on strengthening prevention, awareness, monitoring and capacity-building initiatives through dedicated Nasha Mukt Vidyalaya portal, curriculum integration, teacher training and nationwide outreach campaigns at National, state and district levels.

The inaugural session also featured a special address by Prof. Dinesh Prasad Saklani, Director, NCERT, on “Towards a Drug & Tobacco Free India: The Transformative Role of Educational Institutions”, where he underscored the vital role of schools and educators in shaping responsible behaviour, promoting mental well-being and building a culture of prevention and awareness among young learners. Representatives from States/UTs and Autonomous Bodies, along with senior officials and education stakeholders, participated in the programme.

School mental health is a priority.

In a seminar on “Mental Health and Psychosocial Support in Schools” Shri Sanjay Kumar, Secretary, Department of School Education & Literacy, Ministry of Education, affirmed that schools are not just places of learning, but also at the heart of mental health care.

In his address he emphasised on the following key areas:

• Schools are among the most powerful platforms for nurturing mental health and psychosocial well-being. So, the teacher becomes the first line counsellor.
• Capacity of teachers needs to be built in order to detect early warning signs of distress so that they can respond timely and sensitively. The role of school management committees in actively supporting school well-being initiatives was highlighted.
• It was emphasised that the whole of government approach is essential -— bringing health, education and social justice departments together to support the children.
• Destigmatising mental health and normalising this conversation across all schools and at all levels was stressed upon.

This seminar was organised on 25 March 2026 by UNICEF India.

More than 1.4 lakh hectares of agricultural land in Jammu province, across its 10 districts, have been damaged by recent floods and relentless rains as of September 2025, with losses running into hundreds of crores of rupees.

The Centre has allocated ₹209 crore to Jammu and Kashmir from the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) for immediate relief work.

But a specific, standalone relief package exclusively for Jammu’s agricultural losses has not been officially announced and is awaiting assessment.

FYI - The central government announced the Rs 1100 crore package for Kashmir flood relief in September 2014. Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared it a national-level disaster and announced the package on September 7, 2014, after visiting the state and assessing the flood situation firsthand. The announcement came within a few days of the floods, which occurred from September 3 to 7, 2014, meaning the government took about the same week (a few days) to announce the package in early September 2014.
