"The World Cup might not be ours, but the Falklands definitely are"
Downing Street has responded to Argentinian players holding up a provocative banner after last night's World Cup semi-final

.@javigiorgetti: "You could split Lionel Messi’s career into two separate halves; 2004 to 2015, and 2016 to 2026."
"Either one, on its own, would still make him the greatest player in football history."
Sometimes context is needed. They weren’t defending well so the “5 minutes away” is bollocks. It was a matter of time - 20 mins of being camped in the box with zero clue other than as many defenders as possible. Argentina could’ve scored 3 or 4.
Yes, England were too defensive. But the abuse pouring down on Thomas Tuchel’s head today is ridiculous. He was 5 minutes away from leading us into our first World Cup Final in 60 years. And if we’d hung on, he’d be lauded a hero today by the same people trashing him.
🚨⚠️ Cuti Romero: “Lisandro and me, we were on fire before the game because of what Gary Neville said”.
“In England they love to speak before. We send him a big hug… I hope I’ll not be like him when I retire, I will NOT criticise players”, told @DSports.
Argentina will play in three World Cup finals in the Messi era.
And he led them as their captain, their top scorer, and their best player to all three finals.
Only 6 players in all of history can boast of playing in 3 FIFA WC final matches; none can boast of being their team’s best player in all three.
Do you know the crazier bit? Messi has won two FIFA World Cup player of tournament awards and he will certainly win a third regardless of what happens in the final.
He is above and beyond all. Past, Present and foreseeable future.
Said it before but: if you were Messi you would have walked away after the last World Cup, football completed. I would anyway. And now look. What a lunatic.
There’s an argument to be made that given the context (his age) that Messi’s performances will go down as the most memorable and perhaps best World Cup campaign from a footballer, ever.
And Messi missed two penalties.
Maradona in 1986.
And now Messi in 2026.
@DaveLough123 I get it with 10 mins to go but 25? Suicide! It was bound to come, they weren’t really defending well either to justify a 6th defender on
Always makes me laugh when people said Messi never did it in the PL like he would’ve struggled. You can tell already what he would be doing to these players if he was 10 years younger
Man for man there's nothing to fear from Argentina. Most of their players are past their best or playing at ok teams. England have star players at the best teams in the world. Our biggest issue is letting history and reputation drag us down. Confident and we win
