The children were promised a direct path to paradise through martyrdom; they were given a “key to paradise” and an armband inscribed with “I am a shahid” or with Shiite prayers. These child shahids became part of the Iranian revolutionary myth. By the end of the war, the Iraqi army had also adopted the practice of recruiting teenagers.
