If you are looking for wider reading for your UCAS statement I recommend Drama Queen by @Sara_Rose_G . Its a lovely book that is funny & insightful. I have one student already reading this. I will be posting other recommendations throughout the summer.

Introspection in steps:

1. Ppts trained to systematically report their own experience
2. Ppts focus on a stimulus (e.g. metronome)
3. ..and on one mental process (e.g. memory)
4. Ppts produce report as trained
5. Wundt can now compare reports to generate theories

Approaches:

Evaluating introspection:

✅ Wundt was influential in making attempts to understand the mind an empirical science (as opposed to a matter for philosophers)

❎ Critics argued that studying ‘private’ mental processes was unscientific as it can’t be checked & verified

Approaches:

The Behavioural Approach marked a rebellion against psychology being focused on ‘private’ internal mental processes & a move towards psychology being focused on external behaviour which can be observed and checked: a true science.

Key names: Pavlov, Watson & Skinner

Behaviourists explain all behaviour in terms of learning from the environment. They assume all animals (inc. humans) learn (or are ‘conditioned’) in the same way
