On this day, April 11, 2011, the partial remains of Karen Vergara were discovered on Ocean Parkway, just west of Tobay Beach. Fifteen years earlier, her legs were found on Fire Island.

She would become known as #FireIslandJaneDoe until her identification on April 4th, 2023 and given back her name.

Karen was a Mom to two sons, she had a father that she adored, and a brother who is still shattered by her absence, and she had friends who vividly remember her as being funny, did sleepovers and shared stories and secrets as teenage girls do.

Karen would be deprived of her future, used endlessly as a character in unfounded hypotheticals and her Justice eludes her to this day.

But Karen is still loved, still thought of in the fondest terms and held forever in the memories of those who knew and loved her.

This is one of those situations when you lost but still won. I’m grateful for last night. No regrets to get in ring one last time.

I almost died in June. Had 8 blood transfusions. Lost half my blood and 25lbs in hospital and had to fight to get healthy to fight so I won.

To have my children see me stand toe to toe and finish 8 rounds with a talented fighter half my age in front of a packed Dallas Cowboy stadium is an experience that no man has the right to ask for. Thank you 🙏
