[PubhD Manchester @PubHDManchester]

We're baaaaaaaack! And looking for 3 speakers for Monday 20th March. Could it be you?

[PubhD Manchester @PubHDManchester]

[PubhD Manchester @PubHDManchester]

We'll be back @CrownKettle on 15th August - be there AND be square!

[PubhD Manchester @PubHDManchester]

@OfficialUoM and @ManMetUni represented at tonight's PubhD

[PubhD Manchester @PubHDManchester]

@micro_mario @glacio_cook aw, that would have made for an excellent Board Of Science!

[PubhD Manchester @PubHDManchester]

@itrharrison TIL: the Prosecutor's Fallacy is an example of faulty a posteriori reasoning

[PubhD Manchester @PubHDManchester]

@micro_mario glad you enjoyed it! Your talk was ace! (It's also fun to be in the audience)

[PubhD Manchester @PubHDManchester]

@itrharrison also a matter of what criteria define "unusual". El Gordo's on a continuum of two factors, but this wasn't realised at first.

[PubhD Manchester @PubHDManchester]

An example of Law Of Large Numbers (million-to-one chances happen 9 times out of 10). So much stuff in the universe so large # of outliers

[PubhD Manchester @PubHDManchester]

@itrharrison talking about "the line of constant unusualness" to explain why scientists need to be a bit more thorough in their observations

[PubhD Manchester @PubHDManchester]

@itrharrison must have gotten a lot of satisfaction spending his Ph.D proving people wrong...

[PubhD Manchester @PubHDManchester]

@itrharrison El Gordo was thought to be formed in a different way to other structures due to its size, turns out they were wrong.

[PubhD Manchester @PubHDManchester]

Our campaign to get the "shitload" recognised as an SI unit bolstered by @itrharrison

[PubhD Manchester @PubHDManchester]

@itrharrison talking about a galaxy cluster that's appx 7bn light years away. It's called "El Gordo", meaning "The Fatty"

[PubhD Manchester @PubHDManchester]

@micro_mario ...and now a question about resurrecting the dead and zombies. Just a regular night at PubhD!

[PubhD Manchester @PubHDManchester]

@micro_mario most research done previously has concentrated on ice cores, but none on the basal ice - where there's more microbes

[PubhD Manchester @PubHDManchester]

@micro_mario "subglacial microbes: friends or foes?"

[PubhD Manchester @PubHDManchester]

@micro_mario Melting glaciers are releasing microbes that could be 1000s of years into the atmosphere
