Built this interaction today. One blocker I faced was:

Making the entire interaction state feel smooth.

Using auto-height looks fine until the content changes while the panel is already open. Then it snaps.

The fix was using ResizeObserver to keep the height updated, then animating to the latest scrollHeight instead of auto.

Small detail, but it makes the interaction feel way more intentional.
