Not only are people losing the ability to read. They are losing the ability to think critically about the little that they can read. Video is as mind numbing as marijuana. The capacity to think is inverse to the amount of time spent watching videos.
The Atlantic just ran a piece called "The Age of Reading Is Over." We are literally losing the ability to read anything longer than an Instagram post. This is not good. Think about history for a second. During the slave trade, what was the one thing punishable by death? Teaching a slave to read. Why? Because tyrants have always known that literacy is the ultimate key to human freedom.
Less than half of American adults read a single book in 2022. It’s so bad that a staffer at Harvard actually complained that assigning books to students is "arbitrarily withholding information" because it forces them to use a "difficult medium." Let that sink in. IVY LEAGUE STUDENTS have a hard time reading something and then paraphrasing it.
If we stop reading, we go straight back to the dark ages. We'll be sitting around waiting for a government agency or an AI script to tell us what the Constitution means through a paraphrased post on X.
Reminds me of when the energy market was deregulated. The sponsors said this would lower energy prices. Instead prices went up.
Libertarians talk about other aspects of the "free market" that way: healthcare, insurance, taxation, migration. Yet somehow the cost of each keeps going up.
There is no "free market" in healthcare. Medical schools restrict the number of doctors they produce in order to keep doctors' income high. Doctors hide their prices. I haven't met anyone yet who could even figure out what their medical costs might be making comparison shopping impossible. Simple procedures now cost over $100,000 with a single minor surgery banktupting families of their entire life savings.
Insurance is supposedly another "free market" but it keeps rising faster than any other industry. The monthly cost of private medical insurance is higher than the entire monthly wage of the average worker. Three months' cost of insuring an auto is the same as the cost of buying a used car.
Taxes have risen so much that now most people are paying de facto rent to the state just to keep living in "their" homes which they already paid off, forcing many to leave their paid-off homes to live in RVs while the state takes their house for unpaid taxes. This cannot be escaped by moving elsewhere, all states do this. Yet for all these taxes, the streets are more unsafe than ever.
Migration was supposed to enrich the economy, but instead it only drove the cost of housing sky-high n bankrupted hospitals, while filling the prisons with new criminals n the schools with illiterates who have no interest in learning.
When the feds made college loans available, colleges raised their tuition ten-fold because that was a smart business decision by what are actually for-profit businesses.
The perfect example of Libertarianism is Skid Row. Drugs almost free everywhere, crime rampant, overdoses a daily event, theft n murder just part of the landscape with no police in sight.
America is pretty much 50% socialist, but still pretending it’s a free market economy.
Friedman didn’t sugarcoat the fact that it’s not just from government spending devouring 35-40% of national income, but from every mandate, regulation, and forced cost they pile on top of us.
Pollution rules, disability requirements, endless red tape, it all counts.
And yet people are deluded that we still have free enterprise while the state decides how we spend, what we build, and who pays for what.
So we’re not exactly “drifting” toward socialism when we’re already halfway there, and still accelerating.
The only question left is whether we’ll admit it before the rest disappears.
We waste so many of our resources trying to civilize them, educate them, police them, and incarcerate them. At what point can we be free of this burden?
Managed by "expert technocrats". That's the thesis of Sam Francis who declared back in the 80s that this would lead to "anarcho-tyranny". And here we are.
Former UK PM Lizz Truss warns that Western nations are in the midst of a communist takeover seeking to replace core Western values—including individual liberty, national sovereignty and free speech—with complete state control over every aspect of life.
"Look what's happening in Britain. People are being arrested and jailed for things that they say on X."
"We've moved from being a free society—with a free economy and people able to speak freely—to a managed society, that is essentially managed by... expert technocrats."
German activist Verena Brunschweiger argued Germany should have fewer children to fight climate change while supporting more migration as "climate refugees" arrive.
She claimed a German child consumes resources equivalent to 30 African children on average (up to 500 in Burundi), called calls for more German children "fascist," and suggested a "Club of Rome award" for women having fewer children.
In 2023, sub-Saharan Africa had ~40 million births, while Europe had ~4 million.
The discussion touches on population, resources, consumption, and immigration debates.
"Teen takeovers" is just the latest euphemism for normalizing race riots
Young black people organize mass violence and vandalism and everyone is too scared to admit the demographic nature of the phenomenon so we get "changing consumer habits'
Splenger, Ibn Khaldun, n Pareto each observed the same process n from different viewpoints declared that every civilization n empire would reign for a limited time n would then fall into irreversible decline.
Once the decline begins it can be arrested briefly but then resumes. It never reverses. Trump has arrested the decline in the US but SCOTUS just showed how deep the corruption is n has determined that after Trump the decline will resume.
The usual time limit is 250 years. Some, like the Ottomans n Romans, managed to postpone the collapse for a time, but that only made their collapse more complete.
The fundamental reason for the decline is that a state is not an abstraction but a people. Once the founding society disappears due to plagues or failure to reproduce, scavengers immigrate in ever larger numbers n the civilization vanishes to be replaced by a state that favors the scavengers who always bring with them alien values n conceptions. The old society is then labeled evil n deserving of destruction while the new society covers up its own illicit past.
Civilisations rarely collapse because they are conquered. They collapse because they lose the will to defend themselves.
That was James Burnham's warning in Suicide of the West.
In his 1964 book, Burnham argued that the West was not primarily threatened by external enemies or economic failure. It was being destroyed from within by its own dominant ideology - what he called liberalism. In Burnham’s usage, liberalism was not simply support for free markets or limited government. It was a broader worldview characterised by universalism, egalitarianism and a deep reluctance to assert power or defend Western civilisation as superior to others.
According to Burnham, this ideology had produced a profound loss of confidence. Western elites increasingly viewed their own civilisation through a lens of guilt and criticism, while treating non-Western cultures with a mixture of romanticism and moral deference. At the same time, the West’s managerial elite had become more concerned with administering decline than with preserving the cultural and political foundations that made Western success possible.
Burnham was particularly scathing about the liberal tendency to dissolve hard distinctions - between truth and opinion, between civilisation and barbarism, and between friend and enemy. Without the willingness to make such distinctions and act upon them, he believed, no civilisation can long endure.
What makes the book striking is its pessimism. Burnham did not believe the process was easily reversible. Once a civilisation loses the will to defend itself and begins to treat its own inheritance as a source of shame, recovery becomes extremely difficult. Suicide of the West reads like a warning that was largely ignored.
Victor Davis Hanson says we’re watching a modern-day French Revolution play out as socialists hijack the Democratic Party.
Once you see it, the similarities are impossible to ignore.
HANSON: “We’re watching a modern-day French Revolutionary-like takeover of the Democratic Party.”
“You can call it the reign of terror or Democratic guillotine.”
“What I mean by that, in 1793 and 94, when the French Revolution was well on its way to fruition, a group of radicals called Jacobins...hijacked that revolution and decided that they were going to far, far to the left of the effort to abolish the monarchy...”
“Go out and attack private property, and execute people.”
“Now, I don’t think the Democratic socialists are going to that, but their takeover is similar to the Jacobin takeover.”
“And what is their agenda?”
“Their agenda is a radical Green New Deal, war on fossil fuels, open borders, no deportations...”
“In addition to that, cut the defense budget, defund the police, institutionalize diversity, equity, inclusion chauvinism...”
And yet it was not the KGB that overthrew the West, but feminists who decided that money was more important than having children. Collapse was sure to follow n we are living it now.
Back in the day, the KGB would send agents who used “critical theory” to split every society into victims and oppressors to deliberately stir class against class, race against race, and faith against faith until the fighting created enough chaos to blame the leader, tank his support, and slide their puppet into power while everyone was distracted.
The modern left has run that exact same playbook across America and the West, and they’ve done it from within, without spies or secret police.
They divided people by identity in universities and corporations, they inflamed grievances through media and institutions, and they branded anyone who pushed back as the real threat to democracy.
While the violence does look different now with riots, cancel culture, vandalism, lawfare, and assassinations instead of open street battles, the goal hasn’t changed.
And too many still won’t admit we’re giving up our freedom one manufactured division at a time.
And that’s simply because leftism is a violent cult that is incompatible with a free, just, safe, and civilized society.
The West still doesn't get it. There is an argument to be made that when the Mongols rampaged across Eurasia, they murdered so many people, razed so many cities, n returned so much agricultural land to pastures for their horses that they changed the climate n brought on the Little Ice Age with all of its worldwide horrors, bringing plagues n global famine. The West still cannot conceive that a few thousand merciless parasites could destroy a quarter of the world's population in just a few years.
Whites are utterly delusional about how fundamentally alien the nonwhite mind is: they lie, cheat, scam, betray, and molest children with zero remorse or guilt, it’s just business as usual, no internal voice stopping them.
They lack any real personal conscience. Instead, they live in a raw, amoral world of tight kinship norms and tribal duties, completely stripped of universal principles like fairness or individual rights. Guilt is a foreign concept; shame only kicks in if the clan sees them fail.
Nepotism, bribery, corruption, out-group exploitation, and ruthless denigration aren’t seen as immoral, they’re celebrated virtues that serve the ingroup, strengthen the family/clan, and fulfill sacred kinship obligations.
Their moral circle barely extends beyond blood, tribe, or ethnic network. Outsiders are resources to be used, tricked, or discarded.
The entire Western liberal order rests on the catastrophic, self-defeating lie that nonwhites are psychologically capable of the same high-trust honesty, fairness, decency, and rule-following that evolved in European populations.
They’re not. Importing tens of millions on that fantasy, then expecting functional societies, is pure civilizational suicide.
Does a civilisation have a right to exist?
The answer is no.
A civilisation exists only so long as it has the power, the virtue, and the will to exist.
This is the hard realism of history, the principle Thucydides captured in his History of the Peloponnesian Wars when he wrote that "the strong do what they can and the weak suffer what they must".
Every civilisation – Eastern or Western – was forged by war, tempered by religion, and stabilised by law. Yet none of the people who lived in those empires imagined that their world could vanish within a single lifetime, since decline always arrives more swiftly than those living through it can comprehend.
The paradox is that we study the past yet remain blind to the present.
Every civilisation believes it is the exception – until it isn't.
Civilisations do not die because they are conquered, they die because they surrender. Strength fades first in memory, then in custom, and finally in the character of a people.
When a people abandon the moral and religious foundations that formed them, when institutions decay, when borders dissolve, when wealth replaces virtue, and when comfort dulls duty, decline follows with astonishing speed – not as a sudden catastrophe, but as the final stage of a long defeat.
The West's achievements are extraordinary, but past greatness guarantees nothing.
Our ancestors built something remarkable, but they cannot save us.
We must save ourselves.
Cities can be remade, but once your civilisation is gone, it's gone forever.
One of the odd, religiousy things about the whole World War II myth is that anyone who questions any part of it is immediately suspected of sympathizing with Hitler. This has led to the development of an elaborate, baroque mythology about the actions of Hitler and the Nazis. No reasonable person would deny that the Nazis were responsible for many crimes. (Though somehow most Westerners remain completely unaware that far more people were killed by the Communists.) The trouble is that all claims about Nazi crimes, no matter how fantastic, are immediately believed by credulous, myth-addled Westerners. And any skepticism will produce raised eyebrows and suspicious looks.
Hollywood is, of course, a rich source of the wildest Nazi atrocity fantasies. My favorite example is The Night Porter, in which (in a flashback sequence) SS officers (wearing the wrong uniforms, I might add) use a bunch of Jewish children on a merry-go-round for target practice! Now, if you relate this to a normie and say that you think it’s a bit implausible the reaction will be gaping incredibility and a response like “That kind of shit happened, man!” But the basis most of the slumbering ones have for making such a claim is – you guessed it – other Hollywood movies. The recent what-if-the-Nazis-won-and-took-over-the-world TV series The Man in the High Castle is so replete with absurd myths about the Nazis it is actually a laugh riot (“It’s Tuesday. We burn cripples on Tuesday”). But try expressing that view to normies and see how they react. You see, this isn’t about history. It’s about the central myth of a religion. To question any part of it is to become a heretic: to align oneself with the Evil One.
Congress is gridlocked n useless. The new Congress is SCOTUS n has been for 50 years. These unelected tyrants for life legislate whenever they please, but if anyone complains that they are hitting below the belt they hold their hands high for the referee to see with an innocent look, saying "But I just apply the law!" They just legislated once again.
