‘Punisher’ star Jon Bernthal reflects on the pivotal moment where he nearly killed a man.

In 2009, Bernthal was walking his pit bull when a group of intoxicated men began following him. After one man grabbed his dog and refused to stop following him home, Bernthal "clocked" him in the face. The man fell backward, split his head open on the pavement (some reports specify the curb), and was knocked unconscious.

"I ended up hitting a guy and he got knocked out and hit his head on the ground," Bernthal told Shepard. Later, while he was in jail, Bernthal was reflecting on "not knowing whether this guy was going to wake up. It was literally as profound and clear a moment as I've ever had." An hour later, in the police station he says that the cops told him,

“If that guy doesn’t wake up, you’re going away for life.”

Bernthal recalled the incident:

“I knew if he didn’t wake up, I was going to jail and my worst side would take over,” he said, adding that the man’s head was split open.

“I prayed to whatever is above that if he woke up, I’d change things, get married, have kids, and stop with the anger.”

"If you're going this way, this is your life now," Bernthal said of his thoughts at the time. "There's no more acting. There's no more girlfriend. There's no more any of this"

Since then, Bernthal has become a different person. After July 3, 2009, he was fully sober. And as he said, a year later,

"On July 3rd, 2010, I was in Atlanta, starting The Walking Dead, engaged to my wife, a year sober. A year later, my first son, Henry, was born. I'm like blown away with gratitude."
