From developer to pass defense architect: Jernaro Gilford's rise at BYU
"Jernaro has proven himself as one of the top secondary coaches in the country," Hill said. "Last year, he helped us field one of the nation's best pass defenses and lead the country in interceptions. He absolutely deserves this opportunity. Jernaro makes our team better every single day, and I'm proud to have him on our staff."

BYU promoted Jernaro Gilford to Defensive Passing Game Coordinator earllier this year. Jernaro has been viewed as just a recruiter and developer.
I think he's developed into strategist, schemer and analyst. Kalani and Jay recognized that earlier this year.
After the season, BYU defensive coordinator and associate head coach Jay Hill announced the promotion of Jernaro Gilford to defensive passing game coordinator. Gilford will continue in his role as cornerbacks coach while taking on the added responsibility of overseeing BYU’s pass defense strategy.
“Jernaro has proven himself as one of the top secondary coaches in the country,” Hill said. “Last year, he helped us field one of the nation’s best pass defenses and lead the country in interceptions. He absolutely deserves this opportunity. Jernaro makes our team better every single day, and I’m proud to have him on our staff.”
A standout BYU cornerback from 1999–2003, Gilford enters his 10th season on head coach Kalani Sitake’s staff in 2025, having returned to his alma mater as the cornerbacks coach in 2016. He previously coached at Southern Utah (2014–15) and began his career at Whittier College (2012–13) as a graduate assistant.
“I’d first like to thank my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ—none of this is possible without Him,” Gilford said. “I’m also grateful to my family and friends for their constant support. Coach Sitake took a chance on me 10 years ago, and I’ve been blessed to work under the best defensive coordinator in college football in Coach Hill these last two seasons. Our defensive staff is unified and committed, and I’m excited to build on what we’ve accomplished.”
Gilford played in 37 games for BYU with 28 starts, totaling 10 career interceptions. In 2001, he earned first-team All-Mountain West Conference honors and finished sixth in the nation with six interceptions during the regular season. He added another in the Liberty Bowl.
A 2023 Broyles Award nominee (presented to the nation's top assistant coach), Gilford played a key role in preparing BYU's cornerbacks for the transition to Big 12 competition. In the Cougars' inaugural Big 12 season in 2023, BYU finished No. 20 nationally with 14 interceptions. Cornerbacks Eddie Heckard and Jakob Robinson each ranked in the top 20 in the country, combining for nine picks and three defensive touchdowns.
In 2024, the Cougars led the nation in interceptions per game (1.69), totaling 22 picks—tied for most in the FBS despite playing three fewer games than Texas. Twelve different players recorded interceptions, the most of any FBS team. Gilford’s cornerbacks contributed seven of those, including three more from Robinson, who now ranks No. 2 at BYU in career interceptions since 2000.
BYU’s pass defense under Gilford has consistently excelled. In 2023, the Cougars finished:
No. 3 nationally in opponent passer efficiency (105.91)
No. 20 in passing yards allowed (182.5 ypg)
No. 16 in passing touchdowns allowed (13)
No. 19 in passes defended (68 total)
The Cougars also allowed just 19.6 points per game, the fewest in the Big 12 and No. 18 nationally. Their 2023 total defense (308.8 ypg) ranked No. 13 in the nation—the program’s best since 2012 and fourth-best in the past 25 years.
Gilford earned his bachelor’s degree in sociology from BYU in 2004 and a master’s degree in education from Whittier College in 2014.
He and his wife, Brittany, have two children: Jernaro Jr. and daughter, Jru.
Jernaro Jr. Is a high profile DB recruit out of Lehi Utah.
Check out his "Deep Blue" as well! https://t.co/PhH1rVr2I7
Gilford should and most likely will be the most coveted CB recruit in Utah history. His length alone will give his opponents major problems, especially when he is in Press coverage. He is a versatile player who can play Free safety as well as in the box as a nickel. Still a young DB who is developing more and more by the day. One thing that is for sure is that he is big time and who ever wins his services in the next couple years will have a talented hard working ball player on their hands. He definitely has all the tools to be elite!✊🏾💯#AlphaFootball
