And @ValveSoftware says Pulsen isn't compatible with Steam Deck @OnDeck.
Works fine for me. Biggest issue was Steam input. The game expects 360 controllers or dance pads, but using keyboard mode works fine too.
Tried out Pulsen today with HDR using SpecialK! It works really well!
A few issues I noticed: mines and lifts have lighting built into the texture, so mines specifically look washed out. Menus look washed out too.
Luminance heatmap (since Twitter doesn't support HDR images):
I got into web development by forking StepMania (@PulsenGame) thanks to @ChrisDanford. I've never met him, but he's had a substantial impact on my life.
I started playing DDR at 15, but I didn't have a PlayStation, so I used StepMania. That started me down a path of success.
Didn't realize Steve from @GamersNexus played rhythm games: https://t.co/vDON99P3LN
Pretty cool to see this considering I've personally thought pad games were practically dead after Konami killed Roxor and In the Groove.
I mean, this is why I made Pulsen in the first place.
Player emails problem with getting game working on Saturday, then writes scathing comment on our trailer video on Sunday. The only tragedy here is that it upset me. I’m gonna have to work on my zen as I re-enter the indie life. 🧘♂️
Something I've learned in growing my YouTube channel is how many times you'll be told "no".
With @PulsenGame, it happened a lot less often, but with Code Conversations on my YouTube channel, it's a lot harder.
That's why I'm so thankful to everyone who's been on the show!
Because I couldn't pay anyone capable, I quit my job and went full time into game development building @PulsenGame. I actually used up all my savings.
I started at an advertising agency doing basic HTML and CSS even though I'd literally built a game, website, API, DB, etc.
I've been making my changes to @PulsenGame recently based on fan feedback.
Lots of memories with this product. One of the hardest things about working on it is remembering how fun it is and playing the game instead ;p.
You can check it out on Steam:

It's a bit different though. Today, I'm thinking of "if another engineer saw this, would they understand what you were doing?"
In Pulsen, I was thinking "if I player saw this, would they know what to do?" And things like "can we teach the player how to do thing X on-the-fly?
I've been doing code reviews far longer than when I did actual code reviews in JavaScript.
You see, the arrow charts people made in @PulsenGame were like code complete with goto statements (warps).
I make the same kinds of code comments today as I did back then.
There's a secret replays menu in @PulsenGame you can get to from pressing F5 when selecting a song.
I completely forgot this was here! I spent so long implementing it too!
Had to record 2 datasets to make replays deterministic:
1. Your inputs.
2. The actual scores you received.
I saw this option to restore old scores in my game @PulsenGame. I was wondering how that even works and then realized I never actually delete anything, it just marks everything as deleted or not.
I even save your local scores into a backup file in case you're not online.
Pulsen's DB was down after upgrading Ubuntu. It looks like the password hashing algorithm changed which requires updating the password to all users.
Fixing that now. Score saving should work again after!
UNBEATABLE, by @dcellgames, is a really impressive looking rhythm game.
Seems like the game's a perfect fit for my Xbox Adaptive Controller!

When getting songs for @PulsenGame, we pulled quite a few from dethrone by The Queenstons:

It's a great album as are many others by @HalleyLabs. I write some of my best code while listening to this music! 👍.
I'm hiring someone to finish up Pulsen. I just won't have the time necessary to get the game to completion.
If you wanna work on an indie game with a lot of freedom and implement achievements, an unlock system, and a few other things, this is the role for you!

If you had trouble emailing me on the website, I fixed the bug with radio buttons not being selected and loosened up on the restrictions, so it should be easier to get in contact now. 👍
