We're in NYC and discovered this restaurant on Yelp, what do you think? Should we try it? (No Picons on the menu, maybe we can teach them) https://t.co/QQAVBbBbWw
@OvershotPar@ElliotMalin What? That's not even remotely true. The name comes from the name of the liqueur and the person (seen in our profile picture). Is there some new information we don't know?
We stumbled across this 2019 Picon Punch article by @careyjones in @SAVEURMAG that might've just put together the missing piece from our original research (1/x) https://t.co/zSTflR0m6k
Found a 290 page dissertation on the Basque hotels in California....some light midnight reading. The Basque Hotel in North Beach appears to have been established in 1893. That's a solid candidate for the Picon origin. Dissertation doesn't mention it though :'(
We were able to trace the Picon's arrival in Reno to 1897 via bar owners. We know the Picon was HUGE in that period. But we always wondered what re-connected it to Basque Hotels in Nevada. If Elko is the link, this is huge revelation that connects the final dot.
This is all y’all’s fault 😁 The menu here is so different. We love the vibe and decor! Waiter said it was Ormachea then Bakarra and now Ormachea’s again with newest owners. Food looks amazing; fewer sides too.
@aperpetualdisap Not presently. We talked to the owner a few months ago and they are licensed but having trouble with getting the Nevada distributor to pick it up again. We ordered ours online then begged a friend to drive it to Reno
We like our original aperitifs. The current Picon Amer is sweeter and 1/3 the original pre-prohibition proof. Amer Dit Picon is based on the 1837 recipe. Very bitter & medicinal. Neither taste like Torani
