Hi Stephan! I get your overall point and in a large part agree. I would however argue that AI tools are wildly more versatile and capable of achieving the goals of a visual artist that you speak to later in your post. Much more so than a spirograph or paint by numbers.
AI tools are vastly more capable than the accessible art tool you paint it as. It takes quite a lot of skill and in depth knowledge to use some of the tools and especially to make something that stands out. It surely can be accessible just as paint or clay can. Its simple to play and explore with almost any art tools. But to your point indeed to go on and use ANY tool to create truly great works of art takes something special.
This is where these types of discussion often get stuck. One person always equates art with only being valuable or special if it has some sort of rigorous application of skill involved.
Often people who equate art and skill with replication as you speak of. As in being able to look at an apple and draw it perfectly with a pencil. This is a wonderful skill to have but it is obviously not the only skill important when it comes to art.
Skill also has many definitions beyond what you've spoken to here. At a high level it's the ability to do something well through knowledge, practice, or aptitude. Obtaining artistic skills and applying them can take many forms. Art is the most free form of expression and in my opinion exists outside the borders of limiting definitions of skill and what is and isn't art.
Drawing a perfect replication of an apple with a pencil surely takes a different skillset than 3D modeling one, painting one, carving one out of stone, or creating an image of one with AI. In the end there they will all be replications of an apple. Many factors go into whether one is more moving, realistic, remarkable, or whatever you want to judge it by. But that's not the real point of art is it? To judge it on it's rigorous application of skill?
In my opinion anyone can use any tool they wish to create anything they wish and I'm more interested in how the piece makes me feel or think than if it took a certain amount of time or physical effort to make.
