We remember William Wallace with a sword in his hand, but one of his most remarkable acts was signing a letter, and that letter still survives today.
In October 1297, fresh from the great victory at Stirling Bridge, Wallace and his fellow guardian Andrew Moray sent a letter to the merchant cities of Lubeck and Hamburg in Germany. In careful Latin, it announced that the ports and trade of Scotland were open again, now that the kingdom had been recovered from the English by force of arms. It was a message to the world that Scotland was free, functioning and open for business.
The Lubeck Letter is one of the oldest surviving documents in Scottish history, proof that Wallace was not only a warrior but a statesman thinking about his nation's future. It sat in the archives of Lubeck for over six hundred years. Wallace understood that a free Scotland needed trade and friends abroad as much as it needed victories at home. Had you ever heard of the Lubeck Letter? Tell us below and follow for the Wallace the legends leave out. 🏴⚔️
