Despite my humanities background and support for strong humanities departments at universities, I advocate removing them from technology institutes. For inter disciplinary tie-up with external institutes for credits.

did my https://t.co/zANOEvvHvH at IIT Bombay and my PhD at IIT Delhi. I've been a professor for 14 years now. In 22 years of watching the IIT/IIIT system closely, I have never once witnessed a teacher discriminate against a student on the basis of caste.

During my https://t.co/zANOEvvHvH, most of us had no idea what caste our batchmates belonged to. Many of my close friends were SC/ST. We never discussed it. It never entered any conversation or decision. Not once. Our exposure to the humanities department was limited, though — the term "Brahmanical patriarchy" didn't even exist back then.

As a teacher, I don't ask a student's name before solving their doubt. Often I don't know their name at all — some of my classes have 300+ students. We treat them all the same. So does every colleague I know. So did every professor who taught me.

Social media has now filled vulnerable students' heads with a lot of manufactured grievance about caste discrimination that, in my experience, doesn't exist.

प्रोफेसर सूर्यनारायण डूला के समर्थन में IIT बॉम्बे के फैकल्टी सदस्यों ने मार्च निकाला।

फैकल्टी फोरम का कहना है कि 18 सितंबर को दूसरे वर्ष के छात्र साहिल वाकोड़े द्वारा कथित रूप से फोन इस्तेमाल किए जाने की रिपोर्ट करते समय प्रोफेसर डूला ने सीनेट द्वारा अनुमोदित परीक्षा प्रक्रिया का पालन किया था। वाकोड़े ने कुछ घंटों बाद आत्महत्��ा कर ली।

वाकोड़े के परिवार ने भारतीय न्याय संहिता (BNS) की धारा 108 और SC/ST एक्ट के तहत दर्ज एफआईआर में प्रोफेसर डूला का नाम लिया है और उन पर जाति आधारित उत्पीड़न का आरोप लगाया है।

संस्थान ने जातिगत उत्पीड़न के आरोप को खारिज किया है। मामले की जांच मुंबई क्राइम ब्रांच कर रही है।
