Fourteen years ago, on London’s Olympic pristine blue turf, India finished dead last. I believed the team was no good, the worst in history. I got it so wrong. All the while our forwards were looking down the pitch, mistaking their own centre-halves for a patch of artificial grass.

A decade and a half went by analysing structural data, complaining about fragile defences, understanding penalty corner conversion percentages and writing thousands of words on the mental frailty of Indian hockey. Even blamed the selection committee, the Federation. We also blamed the lack of grass-root infrastructure.

​And all along, bloody hell, it was just a visual glitch.

I think we owe an apology to Michael Nobbs. And Roelant Oltmans. And Terry Walsh, Sjoerd Marijne, Graham Reid, and every high-performance director drawing tactical diagrams on a whiteboard between 2012 and yesterday.

Hockey India’s official explanation is mind-boggling piece of scientific rationale: the blue-on-blue blend was compromising “on-field clarity and visibility”. One can only imagine Craig Fulton and Harmanpreet Singh’s faces when the realization must have struck: “They can’t pass to each other because they literally cannot find each other!”

So, bleed out the “Blue” legacy that so magically carried us through decades of heartbreak and triumph; bring in high-visibility Saffron and the forwards will shine like neon lights on a blue pitch in Amstelveen and Belgium. Unlike, 2012 London, we won’t be passing to a ghost now!

Just by the way, Pakistan, known as the green shirts, won the 1982 Asian Games, 1994 World Cup and the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics playing Green-on-Green.

​So, bring on the Saffron. If the 2026 World Cup campaign goes south, at least nobody can claim we couldn’t see it coming. #hockeyx

Brilliant run by Gulveer Singh! He wins 🥈in the mens 10000m at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games. On a cold & rainy evening, the Army naib subedar keeps his cool in a top class field and kicks strongly in the end to clock 27.49.78. It's the first CWG medal for 🇮🇳 in this distance
