I don’t understand why giving kids the opportunity to try, get feedback, and try again during football practice is considered good coaching, but giving kids a chance to try, get feedback, and retest in an academic course is enabling? #AmImissingsomething?
Allowing a student to retake an assessment for full credit says to the student you believe in them & their ability to do better.
It says I know you're still learning & getting it perfect the first time doesn't happen often; keep trying.
I'm comfortable giving the student who needed 4 attempts to master a skill the same grade as the student who only needed 1 attempt.
'If' a student learns is more important to me than 'when.'
One more reason I love our teachers... is the conversation just relayed to me:
Teacher: “Tell me about your family.”
Student: “I don’t know my dad; he went to jail right away.”
Teacher: “Well, that’s his loss... cause you’re freaking awesome.”
