According to IRNA, the incident occurred northeast of Khasab, Oman, the same general area referenced in a United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) advisory issued earlier after a tanker reported hearing an explosion in close proximity to the vessel.

At this time, the IRNA report remains unverified. No official confirmation has yet been provided regarding the identity of the vessel or the cause of the incident.

According to a new Center For Strategic & International Studies (CSIS) analysis, the U.S. now has roughly 827 Patriot and 278 Terminal High Altitude Air Defense (THAAD) interceptors remaining, down from an estimated 2,330 and 452, respectively.
