Has Putin destroyed Russia beyond repair?
Sarah Paine thinks the damage is done. Autocrats don’t reassess, they double down, and Russia faces exile from the world order for a generation.
Can it ever recover?

If Vladimir Putin praises you, its anything but a compliment.
But considering Musks actions over Starlink he'll probably see it as such. Shame he cant just focus on space exploration and furthering humanity.
🇷🇺🇪🇺 Putin didn't go to war over an existential threat. He invented one.
For a decade he called NATO expansion the root cause of everything. Then Finland joined and NATO's border with Russia more than doubled overnight. 830 miles.
His response? Statements. Warnings. Then he moved on.
NATO was never the reason. Ukraine's existence was. Which is why his Abu Dhabi demand to roll NATO back to 1997 isn't a peace condition. It's a decoy.

@PolitlcsUK Ukraine needs to be supported to defeat Putin. But 10bn when the UK is facing unprecedented economic challenges and cost of living crisis is becoming harder to justify
New poll:
76% of Ukrainians living in Ukraine believe that armed resistance to Russian aggression must continue, even if some of them have to spend some time without electricity, running water, or sewage services.
Only 15% believe Ukraine should accept all of Russia’s demands to preserve these basic comforts, even if it means losing the war.
Since August–September, despite all of Russia’s attacks, public attitudes have remained virtually unchanged.
80% believe Ukraine should continue striking Russia’s oil industry, despite US demands to unilaterally stop doing so and threats to suspend or restrict aid. Only 11% believe Ukraine should refrain from such strikes, even if Russia continues destroying civilian infrastructure.
63% are prepared to endure the war for as long as necessary, while 21% are willing to endure it for up to another six months. These attitudes have also remained virtually unchanged throughout the second half of 2026.
62% trust Zelenskyy as president, while 35% do not.

Putin demanded NATO roll back to 1997. Yet when Finland joined and doubled his border, he did nothing.
His whole lie was exposed. By his own words.
If NATO expansion is genuinely existential — if it justifies the invasion, the deaths, five years of war — then Finland joining should have been the most alarming moment in modern European history. 830 miles of new NATO border overnight. Putin’s response? Statements. Warnings. Then he moved on.
That is not the behaviour of a leader facing an existential threat. That is the behaviour of a leader who invented one.
And buried in this week’s announcement: Putin is now demanding Europe sit in these talks. The man who spent years treating the EU as an American instrument, who always dealt directly with Washington, is now demanding Europe sit in the room.
Leaders operating from genuine strength do not acknowledge the actors they spent years dismissing.
This is not a peace process. It is an expert extraction of maximum benefit from minimal commitment. Standard Putin doctrine. But the performance is getting harder to sustain.

Today is election day in Israel, which is a national holiday. All voting is in person, ID required. No mail-in or absentee ballots. Arabs vote same as Israelis. Contentious process, but it's a democracy-not many of those in this region!
Netanyahu and Eisenkot agree on Israel’s enemies. But they represent two radically different Israels.
Netanyahu’s: increasingly religious, dominated by the far right, subsidizing those who neither work nor serve.
Eisenkot’s: more inclusive, demanding shared obligations and the rule of law.
This election is about the very character of Israel.

Absolutely heartening to see Maria Machado return to Venezuela after so many years.
Her next challenge will be truly liberating the Venezuelan people from Trumps exploitation
