Calling Marathon a trend chaser implies Bungie copied a proven mass-market formula. Extraction shooters have historically struggled to break into the mainstream. For years, Tarkov dominated a relatively niche audience while Hunt, DMZ, ABI, and Delta Force all remained comparatively niche. Arc Raiders is the first extraction shooter to truly break into the broader gaming conversation. If Bungie was chasing trends, they picked one of the least commercially proven multiplayer genres they could have.

And Marathon's direction was decided when Arc Raiders was still a co-op shooter, so you can't even argue Bungie was chasing the genre's lone breakout success. If anything, Arc Raiders proved that a mainstream audience for extraction shooters does exist. Marathon's performance suggests it simply failed to appeal to that audience. Bungie made these decisions years before any of this happened, so calling Marathon a trend chaser rewrites the timeline to fit a narrative that doesn't match the facts.

@SashaTheSheep_ @beastm0der Honestly marathons biggest problem is that it has no clue where to sit. It can’t be casual because arc has that spot, and it can’t be hardcore because tarkov exists. It needs to nail being the middle ground like apex was for BRs. But that’s gonna take some time and experimenting.
