In college I worked on a project to plant a vegetable garden for students to browse as needed on campus.

End hunger.
Encourage healthy eating.

What little grew was taken in bulk by a few people, mostly non-students. Someone would just show up and pick everything they could carry and leave.

At my synagogue I volunteered for multiple free food, clothing and donation events.

Anyone could come in and get what they needed.

One couple came in and just started hauling things to their car. Armloads of clothes and books and food items.

The people who might have really needed it were too embarrassed to come in. I had to convince an older woman it was OK to take a few cans of food and a sweater she liked.

It had to be turned into a small fee event. $5 for all you can carry in a paper bag or something.

The college garden was abandoned after multiple tries largely because people kept destroying it at night.

I worked for a charity that offered free cooking courses with a box of vegetables at the end and no one came. The shelter residents wouldn't participate. The recovery patients wouldn't participate. The lower income benefits recipients wouldn't participate.

I've worked on multiple free food box campaigns for vulnerable communities. Identify families or individuals and mail them boxes of meal prep foods. Most of the boxes were tossed out. No one wanted fresh vegetables. They wanted free bags of chips and mac n cheese. We asked for feedback and that's what they told us. They didn't like 'healthy,' foods.

All this to say, there are plenty of people in need and an abundance of resources that could be used.

I have just never seen a 'free,' system work. Not once. It is always abused into oblivion.

A few very obvious points on Mamdani's grocery stores:

1. The supply of the discounted groceries will run out on day 1, and every day there is a new shipment. This is basic econ 101.

2. This means only the people who are lucky enough or fast enough will get these discounted groceries. Expect to see the city ration these groceries in some other way. By income, or neighborhood or some lottery system.

3. Grocery margins are notoriously low as it is (like 2-3%). These stores will lose a bunch of money selling 30% below market, or they'll sell so little it will be insignificant.

4. There is absolutely zero chance that government bureaucrats can source these products from global supply chains as efficiently as Walmart, or Meier, or Whole Foods, whose survival depends on it. Their costs will be far higher (unless they use government bludgeon to force distributors to sell to them at lower prices).

5. It's actually an incredible triumph of capitalism that you can get a pound of bananas that were shipped to your neighborhood from Equador for like 60 cents, or fresh grapes from Chile in the dead of Midwestern winter for 2 bucks a pound, and Norwegian salmon to cook in Italian olive oil for $15 -20 bucks or so. Truly stop and think about that for a minute. It's a miracle.

The median full time hourly wage is around $31 dollars. For ONE HOUR of work, the median working American can get all of the groceries listed below, which is about 22,000 calories. They can feed themselves for 10 days (or a family of 4 for around 2 and a half days), with an hour of labor.

This is the stupidest industry for socialists to go after.

Stop trying to marry JD Vance to Donald Trump as though they represent the same political project. They do not.

Right now, Vance operates under Trump’s leadership and is bound by Trump’s policies. That will not necessarily be true once Trump leaves office. Vance is not simply Trump’s heir. He has a distinct postliberal worldview, with different assumptions about economics, foreign policy, state power, and the proper role of government.

I’ll be damned if I let people pretend that every legitimate criticism of the postliberal movement is somehow an attack on Donald Trump. It isn’t.

And if more people had the courage to discuss Vance’s actual beliefs honestly, they would not need to dismiss every criticism as an “op.” Calling scrutiny an operation is not an argument. It is a way to avoid having the argument at all.
