Today in Mogadishu, I spoke at the @UNTMIS_ Joint Justice and Corrections closure event, marking the conclusion of 13 years of UNSOM/UNTMIS rule-of-law support to Somalia.

I emphasised that as #Somalia enters the next phase, stronger national ownership, independent oversight and institutional cooperation will be essential. Justice and corrections are fundamentally human rights matters, and people deprived of their liberty retain their dignity and fundamental rights.

I also acknowledged the important contribution of the @UN and our national and international partners to the development of Somalia’s justice and corrections institutions.

⚡️BREAKING: #Uganda’s Deputy Chief of Defence Forces Lieutenant General Sam Okiding arrived in #Mogadishu on Tuesday to attend a meeting of defence chiefs from African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in #Somalia (AUSSOM) troop-contributing countries, focused on strengthening coordination, counterterrorism efforts and support for Somali forces, per statement.

The meeting comes as @aussom_ faces renewed discussions over its future, including concerns about long-term financing, operational sustainability and the transition of security responsibilities to Somali forces. The mission, backed by UN logistical support, is mandated to continue stabilization efforts in #Somalia through the end of 2026.
