A government official demanded 20% of the value of an investment from a private investor before the investment. (2) He demanded additional US$ 200,000 from the investor as a non-refundable fee before he would connect the investor to the country’s Vice President for a pitch. (3) That’s not all, the government official, then, accepted US$ 40,000 in cash from the investor during the discussions on the intended investment.

Now, Ghana’s OSP investigated and found all these as facts. He did not find that the evidence was weak or inadmissible. Rather, this is what he did: (1) He describes the 20% value demand, and the acceptance of the US$ 40,000 cash as merely “improper” and matter of lack of “sound judgment.” (2) He bundles all these acts together and chose to label them as “influence peddling.” And (3) he concluded that he couldn’t find any law in Ghana which makes any of the government official’s actions a crime.

This, I think, constitutes stated misbehaviour on the part of the OSP.

Last night, I supervised a mop up exercise in our displaced camps with the objective of handing out new mattresses to VRA-induced flood victims who may not have benefited from our earlier mattress distributions.

As the most affected constituency in the country with as many as 21 displaced camps and 12,633 displaced persons according to official NADMO statistics, we are determined at ensuring that no relief item lies idle while people suffer.

It was a terribly traumatizing night for me — no human being deserves to live in classrooms, particularly after losing everything they have toiled for all their lives.

I shall not relent in seeking JUSTICE for my devastated constituents.

Not a single soul can convince me that all the astute Criminal Lawyers at OSP looked at Charles Boahen situation and concluded that no crime was committed.

None! This was disgraceful and shambolic.

In the Labianca Case, the entire basis of the OSP’s investigation hinges on the complaint that “Ms. Eunice Jacqueline Buah Asomah-Hinneh engages in influence peddling through her positions as a member of the Council of State and a member of the Board of Directors of Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority.”

In fact the OSP directed that Labianca pay an amount of 1 million 74 thousand and 627.15 cedis on account of short collection of custom duties because those short collections were procured through “influence peddling”

The OSP further justified its decision to open a further investigation because it found the complaint meritorious in so far as influence peddling was concerned.

Whatever the OSP keeps calling influence peddling only he knows. But by this bizarre twist that corruption and criminal conspiracy is just “influence peddling”, he is opening himself up for serious lawsuit from Labianca.

Even worse, by this report, bribery and bribery solicitation become known as “influence peddling” only. Or is it only Ministers and Members of Council of State that can “peddle their influence”.

Something else feels like it’s going on! Sadly!
