this one is for my European and American followers.
because what happened in Turkey this week while your leaders were shaking hands and signing contracts deserves to be said clearly.
let me tell you about Ekrem İmamoğlu.
he is the Mayor of Istanbul. sixteen million people. he won that office in 2019. then won it again in 2024 with an even larger majority. in a country where Erdoğan has dominated every election for two decades, İmamoğlu was the one politician who proved the man could actually lose.
he was arrested in March 2025.
not after a long investigation. not after a second term. on the exact day he was nominated as the opposition's presidential candidate for the 2028 election.
the timing was not subtle. it was the point.
he has been in Silivri prison ever since. appearing in a prison court alongside 414 co-defendants. 142 charges. a potential sentence of 2,430 years.
on Wednesday, as your leaders were gathered eight kilometers away in Ankara for the NATO summit, a judge threw İmamoğlu out of his own courtroom.
the reason given: disrupting order and discipline.
what he had actually done was challenge the schedule of his own defence. the court wanted it completed by July 9th. he said that timeline was inexplicable. before the judge removed him from the room he turned to the courtroom and said something that should have been on the front page of every newspaper in Europe and America.
"with the leaders of the entire world present in Turkey, in Ankara, how and to whom will you explain that Ekrem İmamoğlu is being silenced."
nobody in Ankara answered him.
Özgür Özel, who attended the hearing, called it a sham. "even the worst courts at least try to pretend to be courts," he said. "here they don't even bother with that."
İmamoğlu published a statement from detention. "this proves that the entire case has collapsed and is turning into a series of extrajudicial decisions," he wrote.
and here is what i need you to understand.
while this was happening, NATO Secretary General Rutte stood at a podium in Ankara and personally thanked Erdoğan for his hospitality.
billions in defence contracts were signed. speeches about democracy and shared values were delivered. photographs were taken.
not one leader asked about the man in the courtroom eight kilometers away.
not one.
Turkey ranks 163rd out of 180 countries on the global press freedom index. the leading opposition candidate for the 2028 presidential election is in prison facing a sentence longer than any human life. he is being thrown out of his own trial while the world looks the other way.
your leaders were in Ankara this week.
they saw all of this.
and they chose the contracts.
