Social workers were intimidated into silence. Local police ignored, excused, and even abetted pedophile rapists across dozens of cities. They did this to defend a failed model of multiculturalism, and to avoid asking hard questions about failures of immigration policy and assimilation. They did this because they were afraid of being called racist or Islamophobic. They did this because Britain’s traditional class snobbery had fused with the new snobbery of political correctness.

All of which is why no one knows precisely how many thousands of young girls were raped in how many towns across Britain since the 1970s."

What I want to emphasise about this is that turning a blind eye to grooming gangs was just one example of how Britain's “multicultural success story” actually works: the state and its allies repeatedly lying to the public to maintain the idea that all is well.

It happens when we discuss economics — the repeated assertions that low-skilled, low-wage migrants were somehow rocket-fuel for growth rather than the obvious fiscal burdens they turned out to be — it happens when we discuss crime, where the Home Office refuses to collect data on the nationality of those arrested, it happens when we downplay the anti-Israel, anti-Semitic marches and the motivations of those taking part, or when we engage in convoluted games to maintain that huge levels of population turnover have left us culturally “enriched” rather than fragmented.

Anything that risks “unrest” — people realising that migration might be good for the state, but not particularly for them — has to be quashed. This is why the Home Office contains its own domestic propaganda unit (RICU) to push narratives in the wake of terror attacks, this is why flare-ups of discontent are policed far more aggressively than other forms of protest, and this is why we have such extensive and evolving laws aimed at suppressing speech that might be “offensive” or meet the chosen definition of “incitement”; the idea that journalists like Allison Pearson might wake up one morning to find the police at their door if they express their views too directly is a feature, not a bug.

The result has been a subtle but effective crushing of the discourse into a narrow range of acceptable opinions, which is why X and Elon Musk were the focus of so much ire over the summer. Half of the conversation about “disinformation” appears to be about undesirable information instead; things that are true, but are meant to be unspoken. Speech that is legal but harmful should be suppressed.

At the same time, other forms of disinformation are enthusiastically embraced. Tenuous arguments claiming industrialisation and modernity are the results of slavery or theft are widely pushed, alongside the idea that the “Windrush generation” rebuilt the country after the war. Britain has always been diverse, and that diversity has always been the source of its prosperity. So any opposition to migration, or dissatisfaction with its results, is rooted in ignorance. The Labour party appear to be preparing to embed this even further into the curriculum over the coming Parliament.
