Spotting a financial red flag at a charter school is one thing. Knowing what to do next is another.

In our latest podcast episode, NACSA’s David Greenberg and Jamie Garwood (Ball State University) talk through real financial oversight challenges—and how NACSA's financial oversight community helped Jamie navigate them. Because when authorizers know the right questions to ask, schools stay strong for the students and families who depend on them.

Charter schools are public schools.
NACSA is disappointed in the recent decision by a federal judge in Oklahoma, allowing The Ben Gamla Jewish Charter School Foundation to continue with plans to open a religious charter school.

It is critical that authorizers understand how to evaluate and oversee different types of unique and innovative school models.

Join us throughout September for a 3-part exploration of Montessori and the implications for authorizing these models.

The first session in the series on Sept. 10 will introduce authorizers to the key design elements that make Montessori schools unique.

Communities are asking for more unique and innovative schools—but are authorizers ready to evaluate these applications?
Jay Whalen writes about a real tension in the field: you can visit a dozen innovative schools and still feel out of your depth when it's time to assess a new school application's staffing model, budget assumptions, or quality plan for something outside the traditional mold.
NACSA is building resources to close that gap—starting with a three-part Third Thursday webinar series this September focused on the Montessori model. Read Jay's full piece and register for the series➡️ https://t.co/C3tRDbnFkR

How long should a charter renewal term be? Many state laws give authorizers discretion to go shorter or longer than the five-year norm—and authorizers are increasingly using it.
But the field has lacked a shared evidence base to guide those decisions. There's little research on whether shorter terms actually improve school performance, or whether longer terms create accountability gaps that monitoring alone can't fill.
To help fill that gap, NACSA conducted a mixed-methods study of renewal policies and practices in Colorado, Florida, Indiana, and Michigan.
