It's good that the Chennai–Bengaluru HSR corridor is being fast-tracked, but the biggest economic gains for Tamil Nadu will come from connecting its own major cities.
The TN government should actively push the Centre to prioritize these high-speed rail corridors:
Chennai–Tiruchi–Madurai–Kanyakumari
Chennai–Coimbatore
Coimbatore–Tiruchi–Cuddalore (or Nagapattinam)
Hosur–Tiruchi–Thoothukudi
These four corridors would dramatically improve mobility, integrate TNs industrial and manufacturing hubs, boost tourism, strengthen ports and logistics, attract investment, and create a truly state-wide high-speed economic network.
TN is already one of India's most diversified economies, but reaching the top will require a different mindset. The state has largely mastered industrialization; now it must master scale. Chennai alone cannot carry the state's growth.
Coimbatore, Hosur, Trichy, Madurai, Salem, Tiruppur and Tirunelveli need to evolve into globally competitive economic hubs with better logistics, higher-quality urban infrastructure and greater fiscal autonomy.
The next generation of reforms should focus on faster project execution, liberalized land use, higher FSI in urban areas, time-bound approvals, expanded port capacity, dedicated freight connectivity, modern industrial townships and commercial dispute resolution that works in months rather than years.
TN should also aggressively target sectors like semiconductors, aerospace, defence, electronics, AI, biotech and advanced manufacturing while making it easier for MSMEs to integrate into global supply chains. The state already has strong fundamentals a skilled workforce, diversified manufacturing, reliable power and a deep supplier ecosystem.
If it combines those strengths with faster execution, greater economic freedom and world-class infrastructure, there is no reason Tamil Nadu cannot challenge Gujarat and Maharashtra for the top position. In the next decade, the winners won't be the states that announce the most schemes they'll be the ones that remove the most barriers to investment and enterprise.

What if the solution to Bengaluru's floods wasn't something new, but something the city built 500 years ago?
A waterway that once carried nearly 130 million litres of untreated sewage every day has been transformed into a 12 km green corridor where people walk, birds return, and rainwater can finally flow the way it was meant to.
The revival of the K100 waterway is reviving one stretch of Bengaluru's historic Rajakaluve network, an ancient system that once connected lakes, recharged groundwater, and reduced flooding naturally.
Led through a multi-agency collaboration between BBMP, BWSSB, the Karnataka government, the MOD Foundation, and technical partners, the project cleaned the canal, diverted sewage, restored public spaces, and proved that restoring nature can help cities fight floods.
With over 842 km of Rajakaluves still spread across Bengaluru, could reviving these forgotten waterways help build a more flood-resilient future?
